Iceland east to west early in winter
 

Hi everyone,


Living in the east of Iceland means no crowds, no trafic jams and no trafic lights. The nearest one to our house is 300 km away. But it also means a small selection of goods in the few stores in town. Therefore, a couple of times a year, we take a trip to the capital of Reykjavik in the southwest of our beautiful country. The shortest way over land is about 670 km one way, but of course longer ways are possible. And we are travelers, we like traveling, so the longer way it will be, 1100 km one way. There are only two ro-ro ferries on Iceland, so why not include one in our trip. Not necessary, but fun (at least in my opinion, certainly not in my other halfs opinion).
Our last trip was a month ago just in the beginning of winter. Here are some pictures so you can see what it looks like.

That looks great, though very inhospitable! Are your photos representative of most of the roads in Iceland?

I'd love to visit and watch some Formula Offroad someday :)

On Iceland there is only one ¨motorway¨, that´s to say a four lane road, two lanes in each direction with middle barrier. That is the 40 ish km from Keflavik Int´l airport to Reykjavik. They are working on the roads out of Reykjavik to the north and south to make them wider. But thats a slow progress due to expensive roadworks for a population of 350.000 people.

Most of the roads in between towns around the country and the whole ring road around the country are two lane roads, one lane in each direction, and most of them are paved.

Then we have the smaller roads, like rural area roads, they can be paved but most are gravel.

Then there are the F-roads which are roads in the Highlands or mountain roads. That are more crude gravel roads. They have some bigger stones in them and often also water crossings and are more for 4x4
They are all part of the ¨normal¨ road network.

When you done all this you can also find tracks, that are often very rough tracks leading up mountains or the smaller/tougher highland tracks. They are less traveled but not less beautiful.

Thank you for answering my question so thoroughly! I must admit I hadn't thought of riding a motorbike there (because I picture it being colder than comfortable, lol) but based on what you've said I think I'll revise my thinking!
