UK insurance recommendations for expedition truck

Hi Everyone,
hope you can help me with some recommendation to find a / the right insurance for my expedition truck.
The truck will be imported to the UK from Italy next month and I'm looking for insurance cover for mainly travelling in Europe. Truck in question is a 10 ton 4x4 Iveco and will be registered as a motorhome (private HGV for tax).
HAs anyone experience with UK insurers that accept LHD expedition trucks?
Many thanks in advance
Steff

Hi,

Try the Nation Farmers Union (NFU Mutual)

They are used to insuring lots of farm machinery and have been quite helpful with insuring odd vehicles over the years.

NFU may not be very receptive, depending on where your home address is located , and also if you have no previous history with them .
have a look at forum called "motorhomefun" , as there are quite a wide spectrum of mobile accomodation users on there. HTSH

don't tell anyone you intend to use it for expedition use. I told them, thinking it would make no difference as it's not insured in those countries and no one would give me cover.

Having learnt my lesson I went back and started ringing around again. Despite having insured numerous vehicles through NFU before they wouldn't touch the landcruiser, wouldn't even think about giving me a quote, which seemed a bit odd.

I have a MB 1017a based camper and the NFU weren't interested .

I'm not sure they want new business of this nature.

Good to know Neil, looks like they have got more "corporate" as opposed to the helpful company I used to deal with. Its a shame as they used to give me a Green card that covered all countries in Europe.

You could also try there guys:

https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/

They do specialist insurance for kit cars and anything out of the ordinary.

Neil, who did you end up using for insurance ?

Thanks guys for the feedback.
Having done some more research I found this website Motorhome Insurance Companies in UK - Insure your motorhome with some good links on it. Looks like I will be spending the next couple of days on the phone...

Hi Steff

If you get any results that then can you let's us know as its always good to know.

Its not easy. some of the quotes we got had restrictions on them such as 90 days at a time in Europe , no green card for Morocco etc.

Make sure it meets your needs

What vehicle are you buying

Neil

Soooo, called 13 insurance companies/brokers today and got 2 quotes and waiting for 2 more to come in tomorrow. Have 3 more brokers on my list to call but it got too late and will do it tomorrow.

Feedback so far is that many do not like engines over 5000cc, private imports or a vehicle that cannot be found on their "database".

Our truck is a Iveco 100E21W and the best quote so far is ~£5 a day :-( that is with European cover, but no Morocco and includes break down cover in Europe.

As soon as I get more I will report back.

@Neil H, thanks for your pm, I could not reply due to "minimum of 5 posts rule" on here. I tried your insurer today but did not get a quote due to the right person not there. Will try again tomorrow.

Hi Steff

good luck, they aren't the easiest of vehicles to insure in the UK .

You may get some other leads on the other link I gave you. Quite a few on there have similar vehicles.

Are you buying your Truck via Arno , If so he is a great guy.

Neil

steffUK 12 Jan 2015 19:51

Neil, yes Arno was the initial contact and a great help. We bought the truck already, just need to go and pick it up. What a small world. How do you know him?

Did you do all the UK registration yourself? I was thinking of using a company in Donnington to deal with paperwork, DVLA, MOT and Vosa... I got the CoC and other stuff and apart from the headlight conversion everything is done.

Steff

I have sent you a personal message

Hi all,

I recently returned from a year abroad in my 18 tonne truck, during which time my UK/EU insurance with Sureterm had lapsed. The underwriter that they now use wouldn’t take the 6.3 litre engine in my truck without a ridiculous premium rise, so I started ringing around for new quotes.

It is easiest to just describe your vehicle as a motorhome. If you start calling it an expedition truck you get into a world of specialist insurance and close off the possibility of using the multitude of motorhome insurers. Many overlanders might see themselves as a modern day Shakleton, but most of use our vehicles for glorified vacations anyway.

I am now insured via a broker called Staveley Head. Their quote was similar to what I paid with sureterm before I left. My policy is with Qudos Insurance Company.

I hope these guys can help you out.

Thanks Nick,
When I called around I always asked for motorhome insurance, anything "expedition" makes it only unnecessary complicated.

Most insurance companies/broker did not even quote, reason given were:
- engine capacity larger than 5 litre
- no cover for private imports
- no cover on chassis #, can only insure once I have V5c
- lack of Thatcham tracker and or immobiliser
- I'm too young (over 50 only, I lack 2 years)

I have now insured the vehicle for a handsome sum and will do another round of calls when the registration process is done. Also thinking of fitting a tracker if the money spend on that will give me more insurance options.

Cheers
steff

Truck Insurance

Steff,
I was reading your 2014 insurance thread for your Iveco truck. I hope you can help. I am in the process of buying a MAN 10.5 tonne vehicle through Arno. The truck is based in Spain on Dutch plates. I am planning to insure (age 60) & collect the truck this month, back to the UK, re-register, then off on my travels.

Noting you have got the T shirt, if you could share your experiences along the lines of steps, obstacles, shortcuts to getting the truck home?

Hope you are having lots of adventures in your Iveco. Best Rob
