Tube or Tubeless for Unimog
 

I have a 1300L Unimog camper currently on Michelin XZL tubeless.
I will be travelling some desert pistes in Morocco and Mauritania in Oct and Nov this year.
I know there are a few Umog owners on this list and I would be particually interested in your experiences and comments.
Intuition tells me that tubes should be used to allow low pressure tyres but according to Michelin you can go safely down to 1 to 1,5 bar with tubeless.
What is my concern - getting them to seal again if for any reason they go completly flat. The Unimog has its own compressor but it lacks the oomph that a commercial tyre shop has.

We run tubes in both our Unimogs - but only because they're there!

I have no personal experience, but would suggest you keep what you have, but have tubes to put inside if you should have a 'catastrophic' failure. Your tyre depot will be able to tell you what tubes you can nonetheless put in your tubeless tyres.

I run my Unimog 0n Michelin 365/80/20 XZL tubeless . I have driven many hundreds of kilometers at 1 bar without any problems at all.
The Michelin tyres are very easy to fit, I inflated mine using the unimog compressor and they all sealed at the first attempt,but it is a good idea to carry some tubes just in case you have a problem in a remote area.
I prefer to run tubeless because of acacia thorns in the sahel. I have had several acacia thorns penetrate to the inside of the tyre but with no deflation,as you would experience with a tube.

I run 395/85R20 XZL on my U500 on 3 piece rims (detachable outer flange with O-ring), tubeless. At 0.9 bar in front in Morocco I "de-beaded" in front while turning mud/rocks but at 1.1 bar in sand, no problems.
Get 20" bicycle tubes to re-inflate. Put between outer bead and rim, lubricated with detergent, butter or vegetable oil. Pull out when tyre inflated to about 3-4 psi (0.3 bar). Works great!

I will stay with tubeless but take a tube just in case.

Busy on trip right now with unimog and we have had 2 flats with tubes and we have special run flat liquid in them!!!!!
