New to here (well not new but a long time lurker) and I think Info is beneficial for everyone, bit it on 2 or 4 wheels.
Despite being 4x4 driver I tend to read a lot of moto reports on here, just for information and I belive info provided by 4x4 driver can be as useful for moto guys.

I wouldn't consider going off in a 4x4, certainly not on a trip - I'm too much of a motorcyclist for that, I love the smell, feels, noises etc that motorcycle travel brings, even going to the shops!

But I must confess I do like to read the 4x4 sections, we all see the same problems, it just impacts us in different ways.

4x4 guys are usually a friendly bunch, happy to wave, talk sh!! at fuelstops and over a beer, happy yo help - so why not.

I think, more and more internet forums are moving to a more 'people who like people' basis, rather than what you ride, drive or lead by a rope! I like it, birds of a feather stick together as they say.

Yes I like the way you have summed that up. For example single marc forums with the associated blinkered attitude can get pretty tedious.

I happen to like travel and any thing with an engine and wheels be it 2 or 4 (or any other number come to think of it) so long as it has some character.

Mango, 4x4 posts are just fine here. This is not just my opinion, so how do I know? Because they have a section here just for them. It's not rocket science.

Their needs are often identical to a bike rider's needs. They often assist bikers. We can help each other.

My point, and I do have one, is that I agree with (almost) all that's been said.

One month into a 7 month motorbike trip in Africa I realised that the advice/information (although accurate) I was getting from
some 4x4 guys just didn't apply to ME.
No reflection on the travellers as individuals but it became obvious that the mode of transport you choose dictates all.

Caminando, you'll know this from your Africa Twin travels.

Everything's different:

Border crossings, police checks, campsites, tar roads, beer, any roads, sand, mud...

So if it's being posted outside the 4x4 forums it should be pointed out if your 4x4 or on 2 wheels.

If that's okay?

How are camp sites, tar roads, any roads different to you? So if a 4wd-er posts that a certain route is 700 km desert, unsupported, no fuel, soft sand, rough tracks with apple size stones, that is useless to you!!

What I read from this is that you have difficulty understanding and interpreting general information and apply it to your situation, maybe due to lack of experience?

You can choose to stay away from 4W drivers if they have nothing to offer to you, or if you don't understand what they are saying.

So you push your own bike when its broken down, don't shed bagage to 4WD when the going gets too though after days of extreme soft sand in the sahel or 1 m deep mud ruts in central Africa during the rainy season, don't hook up with 4WD to carry your fuel on long desert crossings.
Make no mistake, all of this I have done for and with bikers!

I'm with Noel on this one...

I'm a biker and 4-wheeler and have travelled a fair bit on 4 wheels. So I will ignore all the knowledge and experience I gained when travelling down Africa on 4 wheels for my proposed trip back up Africa on 2 wheels...

It's up to you to do whatever you want with information you get from other travellers, be it 2 or 4 wheels. Applying it in the correct manner is normally the key. use it or lose it...it's up to you
