Avoid all diesel hobs like the plague!
For a long Unimog trip I would strongly recommend:
See Heating and hot water. and Choosing an Overland Campervan. |
I strongly second Zenslo's suggestions. He has extensive Unimog camping experience. There's an easy way to figure gas consumption of a stove. Gas (propane or butane) is about 20,000 btu/lb or 44,000 btu/kg. A gas stove burner uses 4500 btu/hr (small burner) to 7000 btu/hr (large burner). So figure at least 1/4 lb per hr. For your hot water and space heater you would need to know your insulation factor (including windows, size and ambient temperature and how much hot water you use - much more complicated calculation. But believe me: if you just have a gas stove 15 kg of gas will last you 4-6 months, but if you heat space and hot water it will use up FAST! Get an Eberspacher or Webasto and microwave and an inverter. We have been camping a total of 3 months running in our Unimog and there is still lots of gas left in the first of two 30 lb cylinders.
And don't forget to take an extra unmounted spare tire on your roof that I suggested on your other posting. Tire disasters can happen, and 335/80R20s aren't everywhere, and it's no fun travelling sans spare tire. Charlie |
Thanks for the advice Charlie
I didn't bother writing my life history with the tyre post so didn't mention that I have 4 other tyres, with stacks of tread, which we will take at least 2 with us. I just thought that someone might like some well scrubbed tyres for playing with. Anyway.... they've gone now! Thanks ZenSlo for your advice - we have been using both your websites as a great reference for our trip. Further to our emails I have found out that our Unimog back was the predesessor to your old Unimog back from Willinghams - I spoke to Akinson Vos. Great design but I personally prefer the layout you built as I think it works better in some minor points. We have a 2kw inverter, microwave and kettle but I personally hate microwaves so will tend to use the oven if it's there. We just need to make a space for it to fit into!! Thanks again Kate |
