Excluding LC/LR
There have been many debates over which is best - LR/LC and there will probably be many more. I wouldn't have either.
My choice is a mercedes G wagen and, before anyone starts saying it's 'an excentric choice for people with deep pockets' I was wondering how many people were traveling with their choice, what it was and the reason they chose it? Looking forward to some alternatives, Chris Moderator - please feel free to move this to the 'BAR' if it gets out of hand. |
My Choice - Range Rover classic
Ok technically a Land Rover but not the usual defender types. The main reason I chose this vehicle is 100% comfort. We did a Ireland to Cape Town in a 1983 model without upgrading the supension. Driver position, comfortable seats, super soft suspension allowed many hours of driving without the terrible fatigue other overlanders experienced from their bonejarring rides. Yes we did compromise on "stuff" and took with us the minumum. This allowed us to saved on fuel with a better power to weight ratio. Never once broke down (ie needed to be towed/lifted etc). We kept the seats in the back for temporary guests. Can't wait to do the next trip in one.

Not quite not a L/C
Okay I am breaking the thread rules, but... I have been idly scanning autotrader and thinking about overland vehicles. Realised that you can get a 6 year old TLC 100 series 4.2 TD fully loaded but no air suspension - automatic with 90,000 miles for 11K. Then I saw a six year old Defender TD5 with 112,000 miles for 1K cheaper. So why not? I am not knocking defenders, but to be honest the LC looked like it had never seen mud and the defender looked like it had. In my opinion a bit of a no brainer.
So my question/position is that if I was looking for a 11/10K overland vehicle I would be definately going against tradition and going for the fully a/c, cruise control chelsea tractor - as someone much older and wiser told me "any fool can be miserable in the bush" Gil |

It really doesn't matter
On my last trip I took a lada 2104 around central asia. Anyone who has been at the shoreline of the Aral lake in Kazakhstan knows it takes some beating getting there. The lada did it without braking down a single time (on a 20k km trip, including several thousands of dirt).
As long as it's not a too fancy lots of electronic gismo vehcle, I don't think it matters. I wouldn't hesitate taking a well maintained suzuki samurai, patrol, G-wagen, landrover, toyota, and a few others on a big trip, as long as I feel thats the vehicle I want to the trip with. |
