Hi Silvie, & Traveler 1040

I am sure we will all meet up some where, be it in the UK proir to depart, or some length of time on the trip.

It would be great to have some sort of group drive, I really like the Idea of a few 4x4 or a few bikes aswell, for a comfortable trip down.
The more the better, as it does make routing and directions that much easier.

I havent gone as far as deciding or picking which roads to travel, but I am sure there are many 'tried and tested' routes.

From these routes, it could be fun to make the occassional detour, or 'side step' to see interesting places, that are not too far off the beaten track.

Well, lets all try see how much of a group there can be. ?

We 4x4 persons could always help the bikers out by carrying some fuel and water for them, what you all say? perhaps a spare rear tyre for them.
It is probably going to make it easier for us, as 4x4, because I would expect the bikers to be a few hours ahead of us, (they do seem to ride faster than we drive ) he he he and they could relay any possible incidents, or things that they might see as causing a 4x4 a bit of bother.

I expect the 4x4 may travel together, or perhaps an hour behind each other, keeping in contact with walkie talkies ?
Perhaps a group of 3 off 4x4's
1 could perhaps be an hour infront of the middle man, and again, 1 could be an hour behind the middle man.
Almost like being 'by yourself' but again knowing there is bikers out front, and other 4x4 within an hour if any one needed assistance.

We could even meet up at the end of each driving day for a evening meal, bush camping,

Yeah !!!!

I am South African, but my wife is British and the AA said that the car had to be in her name.

So, why not email them and ask if they would provide you guys with more affordable carnets?

Carnet de Passage

Oh, and we are leaving South Africa around May, heading north along the eastern route, so perhaps we'll bump into you guys along the way. We intend to take at least 12 months to reach the UK

Hi Freeflyd
The AA is a good idea for non-SA citizens, although they won't do it for SA citizens. How ridic is that?
Oh well it was worth the try.
