Ladies in Ladakh - and Tea with Tiffany!

Three trailblazing ladies complete the first women-only tour of the Himalayas, guided by Tiffany Coates.

In summer 2014 three intrepid ladies accompanied Tiffany Coates on an epic trip through Ladakh and Kashmir to ride the highest motorable road in the world. Along the way they encountered chaotic driving, roads made of rubble, mischievous monks, altitude sickness, and deep snow as well as sand - sometimes all on the same day - but also discovered a spectacularly beautiful world, spiritual beyond belief, like a door to another dimension. Join Barbara for a no-holds-barred tale of taking tea with Tiffany at the top of the world, with some spectacular photos of amazing places.

Barbara Alam.

My bike travels have taken me variously through Europe, across the Sahara and into West Africa, and trans-Canada on her BMW F650 Twin, as well as over the Himalayas. I am Secretariat to the Parliamentary Motorcycling Group and also help run the charity Motorcycle Outreach.

Overlanding with Chronic Illnesses

More and more of us are carting around a medical condition. Does it really have to stop us?

For the past 21 years, as a type 1 Diabetic, I've had to deal with a lot of challenging situations on my travels, from coming around in what looked, smelt and sounded like Hell, to trying to work out what on earth was in my food.

David Bailey in Morocco.

Diabetes is just one thing, but many of us lump about all sorts of ailments which, perhaps, we don't want to talk about and prevent us from getting out there. This presentation is a little about my own experiences, but hopes to bring about a synergy of presenters and participants to inspire everyone that the doctor's door doesn't have to hold us back.

For over 20 years I have travelled with my old mate, Diabetes. Its been a tempestuous affair but finally, I think we understand one another.

South America - 2 bikers, 1 SatNav

In January 2016, Mark joins up with Gary (a fellow UKGSer chum) and resurrects a ditched group ride planned for South America. They plan to ship their BMW R1200 GS bikes to Buenos Aires, ride approx. 6000miles through Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia and return to Buenos Aires to fly home - in 3 weeks!

The ride pretty much goes to plan but Mark and Gary have a couple of epic adventures along the way, and realise just how big the Andes really are! This presentation includes some video and hopes to convince other average folks that South America is 'do-able' and offer details of the simple shipping process and the pros and cons of 2 average blokes taking on South America.

Mark Barrington in Bolivia.

Mark is an average 50-something married bloke with a passion for the outdoors. A latecomer to the motorcycle fraternity, he has done a few long trips through Europe and once to Morocco, he has a yearning for a 'big trip' and likes adventures - but only with a small 'a'.

Motorcycle Outreach

Motorcycle Outreach (MoR) was established in 2005 as a result of the work and vision of RTW biking humanitarian Simon Milward.

As Simon travelled he realised that basic healthcare provision was not reaching people in remote areas of developing countries due to problems with poor roads and transport. He established a motorcycle healthcare logistics project in Flores, Indonesia which successfully operates to this day.

Simon died in Mali in 2005, but his vision remains, with Motorcycle Outreach continuing his work to develop motorcycle based primary healthcare projects.

This presentation will bring you the latest news from MoR and you'll be able to learn about our plans for the future.

Craig has been the leading campaigner on motorcycling political issues for over 20 years. He has also travelled extensively in Europe, West Africa, North America and the Sub Continent. In addition to his work to protect, promote and advocate motorcycling he also works with GlobeBusters and has led expeditions in Africa and the Americas.

Biker Bitches and Salty Sea Dogs

Biker Bitches - the ups and downs or travelling with man's best friend on woman's favourite machine

We've travelled with three different dogs on our journey; Skyla, Negrita and Shadow. Travelling with dogs has shaped our adventure in a truly unique way with countless wonderful memories and a few sad ones. All our dogs come from different countries and entered our lives in different ways but one thing they all have in common is their passion for riding. Dogs make great pillions and travel companions and despite what rumour says, moving dogs across borders and continents is not difficult. There are of course challenges travelling with a dog and in this presentation we'll talk about the challenges, paperwork and the logistics of getting your furry friend comfortable and safe on the back of your bike.

Salty Sea Dogs - our experiences transporting motorbikes, dogs and people between islands and continents across rivers, seas and oceans

Adventure riding is as much about conquering dirt and gravel roads as it is about traversing bodies of water, whether they be deep rivers or vast oceans. In the Americas alone, we did 15 water crossings by boat. There were a number of car ferries we used in Belize, Guyana and Chile. Of more interest, we took a sail boat from Panama to Colombia, a 30 hour third world sea-going ferry in Guyana, a passenger speed boat from Guyana to Venezuela, a river boat down the Amazon in Brazil, a 3 night ferry through the Chilean fjords, and most recently a luxury cruise from New York to Southampton on the Queen Mary 2. The logistics varied for every boat from rocking up and hoping there's room for you and your motorbikes, through to months of planning. The travel conditions such as sleeping arrangements, storage of motorbikes, doggy toileting facilities, food and entertainment also varied quite significantly and as you can imagine, the more unorganised and uncomfortable the journey, the more adventure there was to be had.

We are The Pack Track, a young Australians couple from Sydney travelling around the world on 650GS's with our rescue dogs we picked up on the road. We have so far spent two years riding North and South America with Europe, Africa and parts of Asia to follow.

Mapless in Madagascar

Tiffany Coates toured Madagascar solo on a Suzuki DR350 for 7 months. Tiffany's travels entertainingly unfold as she relates them with humour and enthusiasm and of course accompanied by her excellent photographs, you'll be inspired to take off on your own travel challenge. Because if she can do it, anyone can!

Tiffany Coates - Baobab trees in Madagascar!

Tiffany's first trip was on her BMW R80GS setting off having sold everything including her hair and with just two months riding experience. A simple trip to India turned into an epic two years on the road, further travels followed and she is now regarded as the world's foremost female motorcycle adventurer.

Tiffany Coates.

Tiffany has also offered to do a Travel Safe class/seminar for women travellers around personal safety on the road if there's interest and time - let her know!

Securing your car or bike for transport

Tips, guidance and demonstration of securing your car or motorcycle for transport and shipping

You would be surprised how many people load a motorcycle into a van or onto a trailer only to cause damage for it to fall over at the first corner?

This workshop will provide you with the guidance and knowledge to safely secure your vehicle for transport and shipping through practical demonstration, whilst providing cost saving tips for when you do need to get a company involved to help. Shipping can be a large and essential part of long distance travel. You will encounter many so called 'shipping experts' along the way, but for your peace of mind and to ensure any costs are kept to a minimum, you need to be sure your vehicle is secured or packed correctly.

Cuba via Pakistan and Syria

A recent three-week holiday in Cuba which I took because of curiosity and a misunderstanding.

It wasn't strictly speaking an epic travel experience but was definitely the result of one or two previous ones. As usual I had no plan initially but it grew into an interesting experience when Obama, the Rolling Stones and I had the same idea to visit Cuba at the same time! It's about how and where friendship and curiosity can lead you if you let them.

Jacqui Furneaux.

Intending to spend no more than a year backpacking, I bought a 500cc Enfield Bullet in India and accidentally spent about 10 years wandering aimlessly around the world. I've recently spent three weeks in Cuba riding a Chang Jiang m/c and sidecar.

TAJ to TAJ and All That And Tigers Too

TAJ to TAJ - 6 months & 12,000 kilometres in India solo on a Honda 125

1969 and Simon Gandolfi left London for India driving a VW Kumelwagen. A rented bungalow on Goa's Calangute Beach was his base for a three year exploration of the subcontinent.

2009 and Gandolfi returned to India in search of his past, this time riding a Honda 125 from Delhi to Goa where his bungalow had become a beach bar - then south to the tip of the subcontinent before riding up the east coast to Kolkata, Sikkim and the North East States of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh - six months, 12,000 kilometres and a diverse and delightful people....

All That And Tigers Too - An Octogenarian's Indian Idiocy

There is something undeniably comic in a plump aged Brit on a small bike - no wonder sentries giggled while saluting their colonel's house guest. The guest is Simon Gandolfi back in India for his 80th birthday, this time riding a TVS 125 Phoenix. Gandolfi is an expert at meeting people and people are the embroidery of his tales of travel, whether at a Lonely Planet doss house, discussing philosophy while bathing in a moonlit river, viewing tigers from the back of a Forestry Department elephant, listening to a Maharanee instruct her brother to remove a snake from under the throne, riding from Manali over the high passes to Leh and Srinigar or attending a young financier's birthday party at the Taj Hotel - all this and more are the grist of Gandolfi's second Indian oddyssey, six months solo and 10,000 kilometres....

RTW: Just Wing It

Solo female rider with zero previous motorcycling experience/practically no money in South America: what's stopping YOU?

ANYONE can travel the world on a motorcycle-literally, anyone. Solo, without any experience, on a cheap small bike with practically no savings? If an inexperienced blonde with a ridiculous budget and a Chinese machine can tour South America for 1.5 years, then YOU can, too! All it takes is a sense of adventure.

Egle Gerulaityte.

I'm Egle, a 31 year old female rider from Lithuania. In 2013 in Peru, I experienced a Sudden Motorcycle Syndrome: I saw so many people travelling on bikes that I decided to give it a go myself. A kind American motorcyclist from California taught me to ride a bit, I bought a small 150cc Chinese bike in Nazca and set off. Initially, the plan was to just ride around Peru a bit but I ended up riding over 40,000 km via Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, again Bolivia and Peru and then Ecuador and Colombia. I had zero biking experience when I started, and lots of seasoned bikers seem to find a 150cc Chinese bike a bit of a funny choice for such a long distance travel; in addition, I ran out of money in Tierra del Fuego, so I found a job in a local horse ranch and then carried on a few months later. Needless to say, after my South American adventure I got absolutely hooked on motorcycles and long distance travel, and am planning to ride around the world (solo). I am currently living and working in the UK (Coventry) and planning my next RTW leg - Africa.

Top of the World: A Himalayan Adventure

A self-organised trip through Indian Kashmir taking in the highest road, Srinagar lakes, a riot and two of the world's most dangerous roads.

This is the story of two friends who came up with a plan one afternoon at work to travel to India. Geoff and Andy (both HUBB veterans) have for years seen the presentations of others travelling far and wide. The plan was simple: why pay a fortune to a travel company lets organise it ourselves. So the guys set about planning and organising. Flights, bikes, paperwork, visas… Through a chance meeting at the HUBB a third person joined the team. In 2013 they flew to Delhi, India.

Geoff Grimmett.

Three weeks of riding through a conflict zone between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control. The guys got to the highest road, found themselves in a riot, got stranded on top of a mountain and completed two of the world's most dangerous roads. Add to this they were riding through the most amazing scenery and visited the Golden Temple of Amritsar. So if want to know how they got on and how to organise your own very cheap trip to India come and listen to the presentation.

Geoff is 47 years old and married with children. He is a keen part time adventurer and rides a Super Tenere. Geoff has travelled extensively over the years including Europe, India and Cambodia. Geoff is looking forward his dream, of packing up and riding off into the sunset.

The Bald Adventurer - 50 years of bad roads!

Ordinary Guy, Extra-Ordinary Life (apparently) – a balding, bespectacled, uncivil servant who became an unlikely Adventure Traveller

Adventure, trek, remote, tracks, wilderness, desert, mountain, jungle, overland, 4x4, these are some of the words that have shaped my life over the past 50 years.

Inspired by Tim Slessor's account in 'First Overland' of the Oxford/Cambridge journey from London to Singapore in 1955 in 2 Series 1 Land Rovers and after a life-changing 2 year tour in South Yemen in the mid 60s, I quit a good job in the Ministry of Defence in 1970 and embarked on a long journey in Adventure Travel which has taken me to over 60 countries.

John Horne.

During that time I have done a Trans Africa by Land Rover from Clapham Common to Nairobi, moped-ed round Bali on a Honda Cub, run camping tours in the US travelling in a Dodge Maxiwagon, safari-ed in Kenya and Tanzania driving an ex-Military 4x4 Bedford truck and run countless trips by Land Rover in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Senegal and Mali. Along the way I have been robbed several times, contracted 5 tropical diseases and had almost a dozen 'close shaves'. I have also had the time of my life.

Because of the constraints of time and money, many overlanders are only able to literally 'skim the surface' on what is often their one and only 'trip of a lifetime'. I have been lucky enough to spend more time than most getting to know places; based in Bangkok, Nairobi, Chiang Mai or Marrakech, I have been able to get a closer look at the people, their customs, language and way of life. So far I've been too busy doing it to stop and talk about it but now it's time...

Trust, Love, Bribes and Marriage Proposals - Trusting your instincts, and expecting the unexpected on the road

The most asked question is WAS IT SAFE?!

Travelling as a solo woman brings about wonderful opportunities. My travels have taught me very quickly how to trust my instincts - how could I end up walking through the woods with armed men safely, but get in a dangerous situation with a motorcycle mechanic who had more than bike nuts and bolts on his mind? How do you trust to find a comfortable camp spot for the night or take up an offer of a bed? What if you don't? How do you learn to recognise when you are exhausted or ill, and not end up in an Iranian clinic, or accidently trying to buy the wrong medication in Tajikistan? I will shed some light on the learning curves, sheer luck and decision processes that we all make on all of our travels.

Fern Hume.

Fern Hume started to bimble by motorbike 10 years ago, starting with Norfolk, Norway, and then UK to India on her DRZ400. Fern ended up living in Nepal and New Zealand until recently, when she arrived home to save for the next adventure.

Tori Lang, Yoga for Bikers

Yoga? Why not give it a go?

Yoga? I'm not bendy enough!

What's this yoga about then? how can it help me? aren't I too stiff for that? find out more how yoga can help you enjoy your trip to the max

This is a talk with a little demonstration (see the other slot if you fancy giving it a go!) explaining how yoga can be hugely beneficial to motorcyclists, and most importantly, to help you to get the most out of your trip. Yoga is for everyone - come and see how it could help you!

As a seasoned biker myself, and as someone who first started practising yoga over 20 years ago, I understand firsthand the benefits that yoga gives to make riding more pleasurable including:

* Improved attention and focus whilst riding
* Improved comfort whilst riding
* Improved balance
* Quicker recovery from injury
* Improved sleep, and therefore energy and attention whilst riding
* Improved ability to cope with pain and discomfort
* Greater strength and flexibility
* Increased energy levels
* Better posture
* Control over body temperature

Tori Lang - not bendy enough?

Yoga for motorcyclists - try it

Do you ache after a long ride? Carrying an injury? Not as fit and supple as you used to be? Tired? unfocused? Yoga can help!

This is a practical session to teach some yoga - to help people enjoy their riding more fully. The emphasis of the session is on the areas that have become tight or injured through riding, releasing the tensions that accumulate, helping injuries to recover, and bringing balance, suppleness and well being back to the mind and body. We'll also cover yoga techniques to help moderate body temperature and to stay alert. All this enables people to enjoy their riding experience more confidently, comfortably, safely, and for longer.

Tori Lang is a biker and yoga instructor.

Tori is a BWY certified yoga teacher, with over 20 years motorcycling and yoga experience. She understands the aches, strains and general demands that riding, particularly for long periods can bring, and how yoga can help to recover good health and well-being so the journey can be even more enjoyable.

Wandering around the World for over 5 Years through 75 Countries riding 250,000 Kilometre.

In 2001 I took off for a trip around the world on a Yamaha R1. How long? "3 Years," I told the ones that expected an answer. As long as I need, I had in my mind. It became 5 years and 5 months, traveling with "time as my friend". About the adventures, the beautiful encounters and breathtaking landscapes I did many presentations. All of them are different because of the huge amount of stories to choose from. This presentation with photos and its healthy dose of humour will contain an extra lot of videos. The book, 'Life on 2 Wheels' about this adventure will be available at the venue and on www.R1goesExtreme.com and Kindle. See the Video trailer

Sjaak Lucassen in Indonesia.

Because motorcycle vacations always felt too short I started to travel. Before I knew it I got bitten by the travel bug. The result was that I spent about 10 years of my live on the road, using rather unusual bikes. I ride sport bikes. The reason is simple. I find it more important to use the right bike for my heart then the right bike for the terrain. During time my travels became more and more extreme. The last one was on the Polar Ice north of Alaska. The next one hopefully to the North Pole.

Alps and the "blood road" - Riding through the Alps and War Camps from WW2

We shipped the bikes by train from Dusseldorf to Villach, and then processed to ride as many passes as we could in the set time in the Alps. The trip then turned through Austria, and we followed a trail of internment, POW and concentration camps through Czech and Germany, including V2 factories, Dambusters Dams, and rocket sites in France.

The "blood road" name comes from the road the slave labour build from the main road into Buchenwald camp.

India – Hardly Driveable? and
Panama to Cambodia on Brazilian bikes

India – Hardly Driveable?

South India. Are Harleys really suitable bikes? What possessed us? A light-hearted tale of survival and the other women riders we met.

The plan was to fly to Mumbai, buy a couple of small bikes and go off for a quiet two-month tour of Rajasthan and the north. However, making contact with a couple of Indian women riders and rekindling an acquaintance from 27 years ago resulted in:
a) Being invited to speak at India Bike Week in Goa.
b) Being lent a couple of brand new Harley Davidsons in return for two articles for BIKE India Magazine.

So the plans went out of the window; we dumped most of the luggage and the northern half of the map and set off southwards. We met many Indian riders including a bunch of amazing women and their bikes. Six weeks and 5000 kms later, we handed the keys back, thankful that both we and the Harleys had survived!

Panama to Cambodia on Brazilian bikes

The "Dusty Old Bags" serendipitous route through 15 countries in 16 months. A women's take on travel in these regions.

The plan was to start where we left off last time after South America. Seven Central American countries and six Asian countries later, the bikes and us still have a long way to go. Along the way, we listened to Nahuatl protest songs in Mexico, had an encounter with a Nicaraguan policeman, planted rice for a Korean farmer in Tokyo, wild camped in South Korea, joined in Ramadan celebrations in Malaysia, shared a boarding house with ladyboys in Chiang Mai and dodged tanks in northern Cambodia.

When the passports, insurance and carnets ran out after 16 months, we had to come home. The rest of RTW awaits!

Sheonagh Ravensdale and Pat Thomson in Cambodia.

With over 80 years of biking experience between them, two women, Sheonagh Ravensdale and Pat Thomson have motorcycled through 45 countries over the years. The end plan is RTW, but we keep getting diverted. Known on Horizons as The Dusty Old Bags, this actually refers to our luggage.

Scooters in the Sahara - Ride with us!

A 4 week overland trip to Bansang Hospital in The Gambia on Honda C90 Cubs!

In 2006 I was privileged to participate in the very first Scooters in the Sahara trip to Bansang Hospital. In October 2016 I will be leading my last trip to that same Hospital. Come along and see how you can be part of this truly life changing ride - life changing not only for the riders but also for the patients and staff at the hospital.

One of the riders who participated in 2012 recently wrote on Face Book "I have been lucky and ridden around the World, rode all 49 States in America BUT The Scoots trip was and always will be my all time favourite. If you have a chance to do this... then DO IT."

This may be your last chance!

Dennis Robinson.

Dennis is a lifelong biker, now retired, with a passion for travel, photography and writing. 2016 will be his 6th overland trip to Gambia leading the Scooters in the Sahara team.

Getting Started - Your bike, a week or two, a longing to turn the wheels over unfamiliar roads...

On Andrew's first ever HU weekend the guy in the next tent showed him his fantastic bike. Beautiful. "Where have you been?" Andrew asked him. "Nowhere yet." His face showed his disappointment.

It is easy to pull back from the temptation to adventure that seems to hide away in most biker's hearts. This is how Andrew, a personal development coach, moved beyond his own comfort zone, and how you can do it too. Comfortably. "Forty countries later I can honestly say it's easier than you may imagine!" Come and enjoy a session of practical and inspirational motivation.

Andrew Sercombe.

Solo through 40 countries across Europe, on a 1200GS - and a step-thru scooter - from the Arctic to Greece, the Carpathians to Portugal's Serra del Estrella, camping wild. Any new road will do. Any green roadside that my tent will fit. It's so easy and pure joy. Let's go...

Morocco, budget filmed trip - the pitfalls

5 bikers never met, travel on a budget & film the experience. Learn from their mistakes and successes.

Finding riders to selecting destinations within Morocco and Spain for a budget trip of mixed riding ages/abilities abilities on an eclectic mix of bikes; all to be filmed & released on youtube. At times it was like 'herding cats'... but if they can do it... surely you can do much better!

RTW Essentials - a smile and not much more

Riding through Iraq, jail in Pakistan and getting tattooed at the top of the Himalayas, I thought I was prepared; then I met the Germans...

It's great to be prepared with all of the tools & knowledge and be skilled in everything from 'changing a tyre' to speaking the 'local language', but its not essential. Even though I thought I was prepared, meeting more prepared riders (mainly German) I realised I wasn't. This didn't detract from my experience; I learned it made my experience so much more fulfilling.

I will describe amazing experiences and show a picture or two to hopefully inspire and encourage you to say goodbye to the 'daily grind' and take a few months or years 'out' and see what an amazing world it is. More importantly how wonderful the vast majority of the people in the world are and how happy they are to help unprepared riders like me make it to the end. Come with an open mind, ask as many questions and contribute as much as you want to make this presentation the one that makes you say 'It's my turn to feed my soul'.

Dan Skeates.

Dan Skeates rode a 2007 F650GS Dakar overland; London to Sydney and coming home Moscow to London through 37 countries (32,000 miles) over 18 months in 2014/15. Highlights were Iraq, Pakistan, Himalayas, Myanmar, Indonesia & Russia. He learned that preparation isn't so important and people are wonderful.

Two pensioners and a 13 year old bike round the world.

With the help of Ebay and the wonderful Russian people they made it to Vladivostok and then to Canada and the US, eventually leaving from Boston. Mr. Putin's Night-Wolves biker gang lent colour to the trip in Siberia and H-D riders said Hi in Sturgis. Come and hear about their trip if you want to find out how your own RTW trip will change your life.

Nigel and Sharyn Tailyour.

Sharyn and Nigel have travelled to Nordcapp and down to Merzouga, Mococco. Then to Chernobyl in Ukraine, Moldova and Romaainia. 2014 saw them go round the world on their 13 year old motorcycle. Sadly the bike did not make it so it was on to the Siberian railway before getting to Vladivostok. Then Canada and USA.

Riding through Baja, Mexico is a wonderful experience with good roads from California to Cabo San Lucas, almost 1600 kms south. The people are friendly, the food fantastic, and the whales, you can kiss them.

My wife, Melanie, and I have toured 24 countries to date, 2-up, sometimes with our dog, Gypsy. We also run WANDRR Motorcycle Tours providing low cost motorcycle tours in the USA and Baja, Mexico.

Edinburgh to Cape Town via Libya

The planning, bike, gear, and experiences from my ride from Scotland to the bottom of Africa on a KTM 990 Adventure.

In 2013 I was invited by a stranger to join him on a ride south through Africa via an eastern route. He was leaving in two months' time, and I didn't even have a bike. I'll be talking about the limited planning I did, the gear I took, the bike I used, the challenges we encountered, and the incredible fun we had. There'll be a three minute video of highlights from the trip, and plenty of photos to add colour to the talk.

Mat Ward.

A couple of months through Vietnam and Laos on a smoky 125cc Minsk, and three months from Edinburgh to Cape Town on a KTM 990 Adventure proves overland travel is mind blowing fun no matter what vehicle you choose.

When the road ends - Beating the Darien Gap on a Boatercycle

Then you arrive at a point where there is no road to continue. Between Panama and Colombia, there is one of the most dense jungles of this planet: The Darien! Stretching from the Pacific coast from the West to the Atlantic coast on the East, the Darien is home to many different groups of guerrilla fighters, drug smugglers and randomly scattered but notorious tribal groups which makes it to one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on Earth.

A perfect challenge for Dylan! As the first man ever he sails, solo, 650km around Darien, on the Pacific Ocean from Panama into Colombia on a self-built raft propelled by a motorcycle and experiences one of a kind adventure! A journey that not only takes him across country borders but also tests his personal limits.

Dylan Wickrama's 'boatercycle.'

Constant break downs, storms, currents and zero sailing experience were some of the challenges of his incredible journey. When things go from bad to worse, dolphins come to his rescue! Watch the video excerpt of his trip.

Dylan Wickrama (Samarawickrama) has travelled around the world for three and half years and modestly says he has 'done some interesting adventures'.

Dylan's book 'When the Road Ends' has now been published in English! Ask him to autograph your copy at the meeting!

Cape to Cape (or 35000km between two HU meetings!)

Cape to Cape (or 35000km between two HU meetings!)

A motorcycle tour up the east of Africa from Capetown and on to Nordkapp, Norway. Focus is on current info on visas, border crossings, shipping.

At the beginning of November 2015 I set off on my 25 year old KLR from Cape Town up through the east side of Africa to Europe. On the way the trip got extended and ended up going on up to North Cape (Nordkapp) in Norway. In a nice piece of unplanned symmetry the trip started with the HU Meeting in South Africa and now finishes at this UK meeting.

The presentation will focus on the African segment of the trip, which occupied 6 months, traveling up through all the countries in the eastern half of the continent. I'll address the practicalities of budget, timing, equipment and cover the current situation for getting visas, border crossings and shipping on and off that continent.

Martin Williams in Africa.

Traveling with a cheap bike - Personal views on what you need to set up an old bike and keep it going on an extended trip

Presentation uses my 200,000km old KLR 650 as an example and gives personal views as to what modifications and equipment you need to get through an extended trip on your own with (hopefully) minimal problems. Focus is on things you can do yourself, rather than things you need to buy.

A motorcyclist for 40 years, attendance at the Australian HU Meeting in 2010 found me saying 'I can do that' and the next year setting off from Vladivostok to cross Russia to the UK. Subsequent trips have taken me to Ireland and Morocco, and now in this last year up through the full length of East Africa and on into Europe.

Telling a story through Film

Tom takes you through some basic filming techniques to show that as long as you tell a good story it doesn't matter what you film with.

In 2016, Adventure Bike TV is introducing 2 filming courses, Filming your Adventure and Editing your Travel Film. The workshop will be a mini version of the filming your adventure course. I will take everyone through some of the basic tips about how to tell a story through the way some one films and edits, no matter what they film with (even a phone) or what they edit on. The workshop will start with an introduction and a short part about why telling a story is more important then the equipment you take. Then move onto filming and sound techniques, then splitting into groups, watching some short film and get them to talk about how they could be made better.

Tom is the Producer of Adventure Bike TV and has also filmed and edited 2 other TV series and many other DVD's. He has travelled through Africa on both a old 200cc Honda and a new 1200 Yamaha and has also travelled to Norkapp and Nepal, India and Bangladesh.
