Amalia has crashed - hard.

From Frank in HU Bolivia Community:

"...in my house are now Lois Pryce and Robb McElroy. The friend of Lois - her name is Amalia - had an accident close to the Titicaca Lake. She was transported with an ambulance to a hospital in La Paz. I got a call from Robb getting the bikes to La Paz, so I lent a pickup and went over for "rescue".

Now we are all working on informing her mother, the insurance, to pay the hospital etc... I will look after her alone from the minute Lois and Robb leave to travel on.

Of course I spoke with the doctors because my Spanish is better than the few words of Lois and Robb. Amalia was wearing a jet helmet and had so no face protection. So she is badly injured - Robb will tell you her injuries in a better detail (I do not know the words for all the broken bones etc.).

It seems to me that she will have to stay in hospital more than a month. Because I remember a rider (on your site) being injured in Pakistan(?) saying thanks to all those who mailed him wishing "all the best". (that was Vincent Danna, who crashed and broke his ankle in Pakistan, noted onthe HUBB.) I wondered if you could mention this accident on your site and we (later I) will print out the incoming mails to give them to her - as a little motivation. Lois, Robb and I would really appreciate it. Because she is now in "intensive care" alone, with difficulties to understand the nurses etc. - she must feel terribly alone.

Frank

Liberation from hospital

Dear All,

Liberation from hospital arrived the day before yesterday - Yipee!!!!

Yesterday I checked my inbox and was rather overwhelmed to find 146 (!) emails from friends and fellow bikers from all over the world wishing me a speedy and good recovery. I had intended to write yesterday but was so bowled over by such generous well wishing that I had to take the evening to recover. Talking or recovery, before I relate how mine is proceeding I wish to take a moment to say Thank-you.

Current Condition

Amalia was in surgery last night to relieve pressure in her head.. she is doing well.

And, possibly more importantly, her boyfriend Zig has arrived from London today.

Crash!

We transported her in an ambulance to Clinica del Sur here in La Paz, where she is recovering. Her injuries are extensive... lacerated chin and nose. Broken nose amd jaw. Dislocated right elbow and shoulder. Cracked skull where her jaw pushed back into it. Missing teeth, and a little road rash on her hip.

She is lucid, angry at herself, but in relatively good spirits. Her sense of humor is intact. She should recover fully. Right now they are simply waiting for the swelling to subside in her brain. She will be in the hospital in La Paz for some time... no one really knows how long.

So, we thought it would be nice to have people from all over send a quick email wishing her well...

Thanks!!

Robb
