Glass Mountain/Oregon Caves Trip Log

Final Preparations.

Tomorrow morning we embark on an another assignment for Friction Zone Magazine.
Our longest a biggest yet. A double road trip. Excellent.

Tomorrow we’ll put in about 300 miles on “The Slab” and spend the night at Patti’s sister’s house in Sacramento. This is kind of grinding on me a little bit because a truly manly day’s ride is at least 500 miles, but Patti has convinced me we will do a better job of our assignment if we ride less maniacally. I’ve learned to trust her intuition in these matters.

On Monday night we will ride to Mcloud California and rest and prep for our tour of the Glass Mountain area. Glass Mountain in located in northern California near the Oregon border. It is one of North America’s largest volcanoes and is notable for the large amounts of obsidian that was created during it’s active times. Which is also the source of its name. We will have much more information to share once we have toured the area.

On Tuesday night we will be staying at and reviewing the McCloud hotel which looks to be lovely. Upon departing there the next day we will make our way up to Oregon Caves Château which we will also be reviewing on Wednesday and will be the home base for our Oregon ride including the oddly named but very interesting looking Happy Camp Road.

Thursday we play to spend in Yreka California resting and writing and head home on Friday.

An interesting side note to today’s prep work was my obsessive, re-servicing the beemer for the trip. I had to buy a new back tire for this trip and because the tire mounting machine at my usual shop was broken I had to go to a different shop to get the tire mounted and met Adam. Although Adam now works as a general motorcycle mechanic
He spent 12 years working for BMW, mostly on police bikes which are very similar to mine. We chatted it up while he mounted the tire and he was somewhat underwhelned by the way I had the bike set up. So I spent most of the day re-prepping it per his instructions…including a fresh throttle body sync which I think I actually did correctly this time thanks to his input.

So we wish you all farewell and hope to report in from the road based on the availability of wireless survive.
