18th May - Poland

Had a lovely day in Prague yesterday. Got myself a warm jumper! Also spent about 2 hours wandering round the edge of Prague finding a bike shop to get chain lube. Then had to find a shop that did non leather trainers for Rich as his shoes started to give him blisters! As we don't wear leather this can be a bit of a challenge at the best of times but we got there in the end. Bike shop ended being about 3km further away than we thought. Got there and it was closed. Luckily, we discovered they were only round the back working on a bike but this was purely by chance and we nearly walked away. Got what we needed then walked into city centre into 'old town' which is where we wanted to be originally. 4.30pm by the time we got there so lesson learned today, get a tram / taxi instead of assuming you know the way.

We came across a beautiful cemetary today. Absolutely huge! Hundreds of cases lined up for miles containing urns along with photos of loved ones. Beautifully kept graves. It was like a big woodland.

Really enjoyed seeing the old buildings in Prague too.

Got back to hotel at 7ish. Up next day at 6am, brekkie at 6.30am and on our way to Poland. Took us an hour to get out of Prague as the signs were not the best. As soon as we crossed the border into Poland there was such a change in scenery. Beautiful countryside, very green and lush. Stopped at a lovely pub for lunch and got to practice my Polish. The waitress was very impressed with me.

It started raining as soon as we arrived in Poland and got progressively worse throughout the day.

Headed for Krakow but stopped near a place called Katowice as the weather became too bad. We were both feeling the cold and both very wet. Booked into a hotel. Was lovely to get inside and out of the wet. Spread all our clothes all over the hotel room to dry them.

Received text from our Polish friends back in the UK telling us not to go to Poland as there was severe flooding and people were being evacuated. Told her that we were already there and asked where people were being evacuated from. She replied Katowice and Krakow! So we watched the news in the hotel while we ate dinner. There were people being evacuated by boat, roads were closed and the hotel staff told us all roads south were closed (which is where we needed to go). The barman kept saying 'Catastrophe, catastrophe' so we decided to have a few more JD's and not worry about it and see what tomorrow brings.
