The Call and Beyond

Ever since I can remember, I've loved nature and that includes the bush. Those who share this love, those who have the bush in their veins, long to be in the bush or have a dream associated with the bush.
Where did it start?

I do not know where did it start. It could have started in my live, as a child, when I read a lot of story books or travel diaries of game hunters. At first all in Afrikaans.

I shot my first Kudu at the age of 14 close to the Limpopo river. Today I do not hunt but still love to go to the bush and Africa.

My latest philosophy on dreams

I know that twenty years from now I will be more disappointed by the things that I didn't do than by the ones I did do. Well ehhhhh¡KI think it is like that already. I need to do something about that before I forget how to live.

I need to throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in my sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

I will start next year, hopefully in November.

I know the following is a fact that I have to make peace with and I know I must take the risk:-

If your dream does not scare you, it is neither big enough nor good enough

The time that I have to live on this planet is too short not to dream and try with actions to ride through Africa.

At the moment I do not care if someone wants to turn the switch off or if the volume control is turned up a bit too loud but, I have not intentions of turning it down.

I live in South Africa, Gauteng. I had a 750 Suzuki GSX for many years and traveled trough South Africa. It is stolen now and at the moment my daily means of transport is a scooter - Jonway Master 250.

I was a registered tourist guide in South Africa for a number of years and did tour guiding in six countries; South Africa, Swaziland, Maputo, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Although I have seen a lot in Southern Africa I was involved with what the tourist see but in the process learned a lot about other things that are even more exiting and I want to explore that.

I have a lot of leave available to me and I hope to buy something like a BMW GS or a Africa Twin within the next 9 months. I want to use this leave and motorcycle to travel Africa. I am going to do it in three stages.
The first one will be a six weeks tour through Botswana, and
a second one will be trough Mozambique via Beira up to Zanzibar and Pemba. Possibly further.
The third one will be around Africa as close to the ocean as possible.

I hope to use this blog for two purposes:

1. I would like to meet like minded people that would either join me or I will join them. I know from experience that it is wiser to travel Africa in a group or at least two people. In South Africa you can do it alone but not in the other countries, not when you want to explore the seldom visited sites.

2. I live very close to the N1 Highway in Midrand Gauteng ( that is the road from Zimbabwe to Cape Town. I hope to meet travelers using this route to Cape Town and buy them at least a coffee or beer in Midrand. This highway goes through Midrand where I live. I can be of assistance to travelers that are traveling through Gauteng. I was born and bread here.

This enticing tale has more twists and turns than a Rocky Mountain Pass and more surprises than anyone would expect in a lifetime. There are canyons, cowboys, idyllic beaches, bears, mountains, Californian vineyards, gun-toting policemen with grudges, glaciers, exploding volcanoes, dodgy border crossings and some of the most stunning open roads that a traveller could ever wish to see.
