THE ROAD TO VERA CRUZ

January 8, 2007

We safely made it to our friends place in Chihuahua, Mexico. We want to give a very special "THANK YOU" to our GOOD FRIENDS for all their love and hospitality! They opened their home to us and we enjoyed our time with them very much. Corina, Julio-Cesar, Julio, Jose and Julisa we felt like family at your house and loved getting to know you better! We had a great time!
Corina you are MY SPECIAL FRIEND and am glad we could spend some time together. GRACIAS!

Well so far the roads and weather have been relatively good. The only cautions have been the surplus of dead animal carcasses on the roads. The people of Mexico have been more than hospitable, and friendly. In fact just the other day we thought we were going to get ticketed for illegally parking in El Centro Tamipco, Mex. The police officer allowed us to stay in our spots by giving us a ''free citation", and soon there after, met us at our bikes to take us on a guided tour of the city including the crocodile lagoon! It was great to be escored by a motorcycle officer through the city. People are already amazed when they see us pull up on our GSs (like were are from the 'future' or something), but we must have looked like Dignitaries that day! It was great!
Currently, we are approximately 1hr. from Vera Cruz and have met up with some fellow riders on their Adventure GS bikes. They are heading to Cancoon. We rode together for a ways and parted. It was good to see other enthusiats. Perhaps we will see them again someday.
The paved roads have been easy going, but Greg warns that it won't be this easy for the whole trip. Once we hit the unpaved ones it's gunna be a challenge. One that I am a little leary of.....
These bikes are extreemely heavy as it is but with the extra weight, they are monsters. I have had a few 'close calls' but nothing that has scared me so much that I want to say 'no more', it's just made me worried about hurting my bike. I've accepted that falling off or wiping out is a huge possibility and inevitable. This trip is definaltely not for the 'weak hearted'. So we keep on.... lots of prayers for safe travels are much appreciated!
We would love to send pictures and hopefully will soon, once we figure out how to do it. Please be patient with us!!!!

the 'Warm Up'

We finally made it to Phoenix, Arizona and dropped off the 26ft Budget truck that we hauled our bikes with. We stayed with some good friends there (Murray and Doreen) and were able to relax and unwind and get ready for the ride to Mexico. We were to rendevous with some friends in Villa Ahumada, Mexico. Once we finally got there we were approached by two bikes who we thought were the police, because of the 'strobe' lights on their motorcycles, but it was our friends. So they escorted us to our Hotel. The following day we reached Chihuahua, Mexico and will stay there for a few days for some more relaxing for the next leg of our trip.
We will heading to Monterey, Mexico as we are anxious to find some warmer weather, as it is considerably cold here.
Hopefully, we have safe travels, good weather and good roads in this next leg. Our intention is to get to Tampico in a couple of days!

This enticing tale has more twists and turns than a Rocky Mountain Pass and more surprises than anyone would expect in a lifetime. There are canyons, cowboys, idyllic beaches, bears, mountains, Californian vineyards, gun-toting policemen with grudges, glaciers, exploding volcanoes, dodgy border crossings and some of the most stunning open roads that a traveller could ever wish to see.
