A new country is a new challenge. Some things change, others don’t. Uruguay and Argentina share lots of things. The old part of Colonia, that is on the left bank of the Rio de la Plata (Silver River), is a pretty and romantic place, with many trees, rock-paved roads, and typical restaurants.

Un nuevo país es siempre un nuevo reto. Unas cosas cambian, otras son semejantes, pero Uruguay y Argentina comparten muchas cosas. La parte antigua de Colonia del Sacramento, que está a orillas del Río de la Plata, es un bello lugar, muy romántico, con muchos árboles, calles empedradas y restaurantes típicos.

I’m riding with Peter Rubke whom I met in Tierra del Fuego. The rain storm we’re told in Montevideo got us after reaching Punta del Este, the main beach for Uruguayans and many Argentineans. We couldn’t set up the tents because the rain and decided to sleep into the “quincho” (general saloon). Next day was full of rain but I took the advantage working in my log #25.

Voy rodando con Peter Rubke, con quien nos encontramos en Tierra del Fuego. El temporal que nos anunciaron en Montevideo se hizo sentir apenas llegamos a Punta del Este. No pudimos armar las carpas y decidimos dormir en el quincho (salón general que usualmente tienen los campings). El día siguiente fué de lluvia total pero lo aproveché preparando el reporte 25.

We could leave the next day, riding back to the west by other routs. Next, we headed north by the center of this small country, touching Canelones and Florida.

Al día siguiente pudimos salir. Nos devolvimos hacia el oeste por otras rutas y luego tomamos por el centro del país hacia el norte, pasando por Canelones y Florida.

……………..but my curiosity was on the horses. In Paso de los Toros we knew about the Patria Gaucha festival in Tacuarembó, a hundred kilometres ahead. We decided to continue that day reaching the town soon after a pretty sunset.
