It’s said angles and broken lines make construction seismic-resistant.

Going to MachuPicchu via Santa Teresa, Málaga Pass at 4.350 m is a permanent cloudy spot. The southern side is dry, but the northern one is rainy jungle. From Ollantaytambo there are 85 km of good tarmac, and 55 of rideable off-road to Santa Teresa. From Santa Maria to Santa Teresa, the former hard road was shortened by 13 km, so you don’t have to wading streams because bridges were built. I would say any kind of bike can go this way.

In Santa Teresa you find hostels to stay. I was in Yakumama Hostel, Angel Estrada, tel. (084) 83 01 60. Book from Cuzco if you are going on weekend.

Sign on a sleeper. Really true. Every time you open your mouth, dollars are expelled at high speed. Train, bus, entrance, food, indeed bathrooms, are very expensive. The attention is not as personalized as the most sites in Peru.

.
.
-----------------------------------------
.
.
From Santa Teresa there is a road up to hydro, 8 km away. There is a parking for cars and bikes in a house before passing the river. Next, you walk 12 km up to Aguas Calientes to take the bus to Machu Picchu, 2.6 km away but with a 600 m climbing. Other options are taking the train in hydro, only twice a week, and walking to Machu Picchu instead of going by bus.
.

Machu Picchu has a special atmosphere. Technically is similar to other cities, but probably its placement, in the middle of the forest and surrounded by steeply mountains with almost vertical slopes, make it unique.

People with plenty of time find different activities to do. Others, less lucky coming in groups, only manage to listen to the guide explanation and quickly continue with no time for details observing nor enjoying the moment.
