NEW Adventure Motorcycling book from Haynes!
Adventure Motorcycling
Everything you need to plan and complete the journey of a lifetime.

You missed a good one!

The Rally was a fun time, we had over 30 participants from as far away as Switzerland, UK and Ireland, as well as North Americans from Alberta, Missouri, Texas and more!

See the June issue of the ezine for details on the event.

See you next year at a new location to be announced by end of the summer!

Nairn Falls Weather update

We were there as of May 12, and it was in the high 20's Celsius (80's to the Yanks), warm and dry! The locals insist that the weather will stay warm from now on. So any of you folks who thought it would be too cold to camp, not so! See the pics we took for an idea of how scenic the drive will be.

The Plan

The general plan is for people to arrive anytime on Saturday May 25th, get organized, possibly go for a ride in the area, or just hang out and admire each other's bikes ;-) Grant will do a bike tech session in the afternoon for those interested. Due to popular demand, this will include 'How to attempt to kick-start a GS.'

We will have an early dinner, then several short (20-30 minutes) slide shows are planned.

  • Jeff and Linda Anspach will be giving a show on their travels in South America.
  • Cindy Liboiron and Dan Graham will be giving a show on their travels in Australia.
  • Grant and Susan Johnson will be giving a show on their RTW trip, and/or on trip planning, followed by Q&A. Ours will be longer than 20-30 minutes, depending on whether people are asleep or not!
  • Andy Miller, UK, currently on a RTW ride will do a slide show on his adventures in Asia.

That's pretty much the extent of the planned activities, unless anyone has any brilliant ideas. For the Europeans, we will have a 'Make the longest rope out of your clothing' contest. No, that's a joke, we Canadians are very prudish types and besides it will likely not be warm enough! Mostly we just want to let people meet other travellers, share stories, and for those people actively planning a trip, get some practical how-to tips.

We will be there on Friday May 24th, if anyone does wish to arrive early. No activities are planned, but we're always willing to swap stories.

Booze will not be sold, we aren't going to have a liquor licence. However, you can BYOB (bring your own booze or whatever else you're drinking), or you can buy it in Pemberton. Just don't drive with opened bottles in your vehicle, it's illegal in BC.

We also have a couple of 'package deals' available:

The Location

Getting There

For the Americans, it is about 2-3 hours drive from the US border. Take the Truck Crossing at Blaine border, and follow the signs to Whistler to avoid downtown Vancouver. Otherwise, just stay on Highway 99 all the way through Vancouver past Whistler to Nairn Falls. If you get to Pemberton, you've gone too far. Detailed directions from Blaine, WA, with a map, can be found at this link on www.MapBlast.com.

If you're coming from further east, you can come up through Hope past Lytton on Highway 12, then take Highway 99 south just past Pemberton. This is a fabulous ride. The riding in the area is great too. We will be checking out some possible day rides and will post more details in early May.

The Group Campsite is in the very center of the campground in the map below. It contains a central firepit for cooking, 6-7 picnic tables, and is close to water and toilets. Sorry, no showers, but there is a nice glacier-fed river for the hardy!

Information about the area

BC Parks information page - Nairn Falls - Covers basic park info, location, facilities.

"Just 20 minutes north of Whistler is Nairn Falls Park. This park provides a good base camp for exploring Whistler, the Pemberton Valley or nearby Garibaldi Provincial Park. It is an excellent overnight stop before continuing onto the Duffey Lake Road or points north or south. The falls are 60 m high and a 1.5 km hiking trail will take you to the viewpoint.

Outside the park, One Mile Lake is 2km north on Highway 99. This is a popular area for swimming and picnicing. There are no lifeguards at this lake. The Sani Station is located 2 km north across from the "Petro Can" gas station. Other activities in the Pemberton area might include horseback riding, river rafting or mountain biking."

BC Adventure.com - "Nairn Falls is not to be missed. The waterfall that this park draws it's name from plummets over 50 metres into the valley below. Cast a fly line into nearby rivers or hike through the conifers of a B.C. forest."

Pemberton.net is the Pemberton & District Chamber of Commerce site, and has a fair number of links to activities in the area, as well as a map of Pemberton itself. "Nestled under majestic Mount Currie is the growing village of Pemberton. Pemberton hosts a wide variety of recreation activities including snowmobiling, horseback riding, skiing, golfing, hiking, rafting, jet boating, and gliding."
