Year of Tenere with odd paperwork?

I've an XT Tenere with some odd paperwork, and am trying to figure out what year it is. Neck plate shows "XT600Z" and the VIN starts "3DS 000***", same as on the engine. Can someone tell me the year? I know the range is 1982-1987, and that the bike came out of CH. Since the bike was never imported into the USA, no one over here even has parts listing. Also, is there a source for parts in the USA? Thanks in advance. I like the bike. Dr. Gregory W. Frazier globeridergreg@yahoo.com

Hello,

I've sourced some parts for the Tenere. However, they are all located over seas. I'm in process of building a "Tenere" from a 1985 XT600N U.S. model that I've had for about 17 years. I located the seat and tank from a 1983 TENERE out of Australia and ordered various parts from the U.K. and Italy. I should complete my project within the next two weeks. The 3DS is the Swiss spec version of a Ténéré XT600Z, made between '88 and '90/1.

The model designation for most of the rest of Europe was the 3AJ. Differences as far as I know were limited to the headlight, graphics, carbs & transmission.

3AJs had two versions, MK1s had a 15cm (6") oil cooler, the later MK2s had a 30cm (12") oil cooler and uprated oil supply to fifth gear. The 3DS was *probably* the same. Might help you narrow it down a bit.

David Lambeth is UK based if you want an English speaking XT specialist, details on this board somewhere. Otherwise there are plenty in Germany - see www.xt600.de.
