yamaha xt smoking alot burning oil
 

this xt600e is burning lots of oil like crap man rode 15 miles and it looks like it burn a quart of fresh oil. been told is the valve seals are bad. where can i get those or what can i do to rectify this problem?

A quart of oil in 15 miles is way more than can be lost down valve guides. Only faulty piston rings can account for so much oil being burned.

It would help if you could explain the history leading up to this problem, past oil consumption, state of 5th gear and how the bike has been used and serviced.

are you sure the engine hasn't been overfilled with oil?
these xt's are a bit fussy with oil levels,and will pump it into the airbox if too much is in there

Rings for sure.
Get at a new piston and a rebore and give your oil and filter a change...

the oil isn't burning that fast. my bad.... it's because the engine engine itself had literally very little oil that when i put in the quart i thought some would show up.

Do a complete top end rebuild, to do the valve stem oil seals the head has to come off & the valves have to come out.

So while your at that stage check your valve seats (may need re-cutting) and you may as well do the piston/rings & barrel like Tom said, or at least have a look.

The valve seals come as part of the top end gasket kit that your going to need to do the job, you may need a new piston kit as well.

If the barrel is scored (scratched) you will need a re-bore & an oversize piston.

All up your looking around $300 plus a weekends work.

There is a strong possibility here that the bike is new to you Adrian222, and that the dry sump that is the xt has created some confusion. I have seen this from other folk who own dry sump engines. An easy mistake to make. If this is the case, then you’ve saved a few £/$?

However adrien, as Mezo says, it would be nice to know more spec on the xt you have, maybe even some photographs.

So, basically, there is not a real problem at all.The engine was just short of oil to begin with and now that it has been topped up there is no longer a problem.

Or have I misunderstood the thread?

i believe it it is a 3aj/3tb the side of the cylinder has 3aj but the documents point it to being a 3tb the engine number checks out as correct on the documents. this bike needs a complete restore. good engine need lots of tlc it seems like its a 1998 yamaha xt 600. the side cover for the clutch is seemless and doesn't have an outer ring like the 1990 models.
