xtz660 spluttering/backfires,stops.
 

hi,great forum by the way.i recently bought an xtz660 tenere from the Isle of Man.The bike would not start on the starter,but bumped started ok,and seemed to charge as then starter seemed to be ok.how ever the bike did cut out a couple of times,but easy restarted on the starter switch.I rode off the ferry into the night an approx 22 miles the lights started to dim,an then bike cut out.Snowing at the time and 200 miles from home,i had to get recovery from friend.


Bike at home,battery was reading 11 volts,so attached a different battery an she seemed ok,but then broke down again and the spark was weak,i then went an got new rectifier,new battery and charged it for 24 hours prior to fitting to bike,and also put new spark plug in an for good measure changed coil as had new one spare.


Prior to waiting on battery to charge properly i investigated conections,and found the 3 pin alternator plug to be in a very sorry rusted state,so cut a 3 pin plug of an old wiring harness an replaced it,soldering it to the xtz,


once rebuilt,the bike started up fine on the starter switch,and sounded completly different,The bike seemed to have new lease of life,as the front wheel came up with ease,the bikes power had come back and i started to really enjoy this bikes new power.


Then she started to splutter and back fire,then cut out,she would not start on the starter an so,again had to bump start her,she did start up in the end and i had to open full throttle,whilst she still back firing and spluttering,then she died.


So conclusion,the battery is not charging properly.
she seems like she has some kind of fuel starvation,or i have an electrical fault
Any help on what else i can check on would be very appreciated.kind regards Gary.:helpsmilie:

it was snowing at the time, what about condense, water in your gassoline?

Check your battery voltage. If the starter is not working because of low voltage you have a charging problem. Get your shop manual out and check the output of those 3 wires coming out of your alternator and also if they are not grounded. Just a note but even tho batteries are charge for a lenghth of time they might not be fully charged...if they have sat on the shelf too long they might not fully charge or might take longer than recomended.

hi,i will empty out petrol,remove carb and clean out,as i did notice condensation in the alternator cover near the starter as the oil was white,but further investigation on head gasket gone,thank fully ok,but water could be the culprit,

Hi,i will take both my battery and get them checked by some one with the right equitment,I just order a multimeter,i will have to learn how to use one properly,and just ordered a service imformation pack,so i will get straight on that.
