XTZ660 Power Loss at High Altitude
 

Hi Everyone,

I've got a 1995 3YF, and two years ago when up in the Pyrenees, suffered severe power loss on the high passes. I would have to go down a gear or two lower than would normally be the case for a given incline. This cleared up when i got low down again, so i put it down to bad fuel and thought no more about it.

Last year, it happened again in the Alps, again on the higher sections. I cannot let this happen again on my trip to the Balkans this year, so need some ideas. I was thinking it was running too rich in the rarified air. I still get 50 mpg at sea level so fuel consumption is good.

Any ideas please?

The air is thinner at high altitude, so you get less air in on everry intakestroke, so you're bike shoukld be running too rich at high altitude.

Shouldn't be THAT bad tho', I think.

Yer... The air is thinner as you get higher meaning less Oxygen in the fuel/air mixture.

You bike runs boggy and rough but it wont do any harm unless you you ride like this for weeks at a time.

You can also adjust your carb for the conditions if you are handy with spanners.

I have 1996 4BW, brought in Austria, restricted model with 40 PS. The
same happened to me previously in Alps. Then I removed restriction and
bike revs much easier and no problem with altitude sickness at all. The
highest point I reached is Coll Sommellier, 3050 meters above see level.
