Perhaps the bearing in the startercover is dead?

sounds odd that it should just be on turning over. my 97 660 was doing it all the time when i brought it and it was found to be a lose crank nut acommon fault with the 660s so im told even with the tab washer bent over they still work lose so need to be threadlocked and re tightened and thats it no problems since.
