can my bike xtz660 run healthily if the battery is no longer holding a charge. i suspect my battery may be on the way out and i wanted to know if i started it using jumper leads will the bike still go ok if the battery is knackered...this would only be done in emergencies ...just interested to know.

You bike will run, but only for a while, depending on the charge left in the battery and the RPM of the engine (+ whether you are using your lights etc.). Eventually the bike will start to misfire and ultimately stop altogether, as the charge from the alternator will not be enough to feed the ignotion properly. If you battery is on it's way out, best you get a new one. If you are in the U.K. try giving '5 Star Batteries' a call on 020 8594 7921 - Ask for Jim (mention that his son gave you the number via the internet) and you are sure of a great discount on the retail price. 5 start batteries are based in Dagenham (East London), but supply stores all over the county, so although you will have to collect the battery, you can probably do so from a 'fairly' local supplier.

Ah, I've just seen your from Aus, so forget my bcomment on 5 Star Batteries. But anyone else reading this post can make use of this info.!

Craig....

I once had the rectifier broken in the Pyrenees, stopped in the south of France, next morning jumpstarted the bike [with girlfriend and luggage down the hill] and rode back to Holland without problems.
