xtz660 '92 cooling

Hi,

A few questions about my 1992 XTZ 660 Tenere. The bike runs great, but uses oil. A common problem I've heard. I changed the piston rings, valves and guides at 40 k, which improved it somewhat.

The bike is overcooled on the road. In the summer on hot days I can just about get it up to normal running temperature when on a run, the cooling fan will cut in however around town and on the trail.

In the winter, spring and autumn it never gets much above cold on the temp guage and the oil temp never reaches much 70 on the road or elsewhere.

Do you think that this low temperature could be a cause of oil consumption i.e. the piston and rings never expanding to the correct diameter and does anyone know if the thermostat can be down or upgraded as in a car for different air temperatures and climates?

thanxs David

Just block the cooler a bit, with cardboard or simular. (perhaps find something more permanent) Its an easy fix, and people do it to many bikes during cold periods.

Thanks Jens

I was thinking of that. I've seen people do it on older cars.

Just wondering if there was a more scientific solution with a change of thermostat

Well first step is to varify that the thermostat is opening correctly, and/or not stuck open :)

Im guessing its working correctly as the fan cuts in if Im riding at slow speed around town or on a trail, when the temp guage is registering about 70 percent.

Is it possible to buy a thermostat for winter use , which is closed longer or opens at normal operating temp ?

Thw whole idea of the thermostat is that it only opens when the water is sufficient hot. So you shouln't need a winther one, even if it existed (I dont think it does, sorry). But the coolers cool more in the winther, because of the cold air. I would just find an easy way to block a part of the cooler.

Hah, it kinda makes me love my aircooled bike more :scooter: (again, sorry :D)

Hi Jens

Yep that looks like the solution.

I rode a 200 k lap around Gotland today with a temporary piece of cardboard covering the radiator with a 100 x 100 hole in it. It worked perfectly. Engine up to correct running temp, actually got the oil up to 90 degrees. Trottle response improved and used little oil. The cooling system on this bike must be massively over-dimensioned.

I will sort out a more permanent solution in aluminium when I'm back on the mainland next week.
