Xtz 1200 Super Tenere
 

anyone else seen the article in today,s mcn , about yamaha,s new 1200 super tenere ? the new bike is already being road tested in italy and sweden by yamaha . it will be shown at this years intermot bike show in germany in october , and will be in yamaha dealers for 2009 . i have always thought that the tdm 900 engine would be ideal for a big new super tenere , but it look,s like yamaha are going after the BMW 1200 gs type of bike . i will wait and see , it could be interesting if they can keep the weight down .

Far too early for prices, but that will be even more interesting - I went to the launch of the revised BMW 1200GS a short time ago and the bikes on the showroom floor were very little short of £10 000 on the road, with the usual essential extras such as heated hand grips and the like.

What engine?
 

The MCN article implies (or even says?) that the new Yam will not have the TDM engine, but it will be a parallel twin - any thoughts on what engine design it could be? Would a bored out, and/or increased stroke, 900cc do the job?
It will have to be fuel injected for the Euro market.

The newspaper has a "mock up" pic in print (big yellow thingie) but I haven't seen it on their website - they tend to hold stuff back for a while online so that they sell more papers.

Anyway, the pic is a mock up only and they have just copied the XTZ660Z that will be in the shops in April for about £4900.
It is said that the bikes are being trucked in and out of the Yam facility in Italy to the test roads to avoid the spy cameras, but that won't stop pics getting out sooner or later.

Sounds like a monster,If they have decent suspension and 25+ fueltank it might just be the thing to challenge the Bmw´s:thumbup1:

I'd prefer it if they had put the 900 engine in - a 1200 seems a little much for something like this, and economy and weight are key factors. One thing I did like about the MCN article was that they seem to think it should have decent off-road ability. Whether it will or not is another matter, but it's nice to read a bike journalist talking about wire wheels and off-road ability positively. Basically many of the qualities we already had in the old Super Tenere, Africa Twin and to some extent the Elephant. Bring back the '80s!

There should not be too much of a problem there: the new XTZ660Z has a 22L tank as standard.
It weighs around 180Kg, from memory, which is quite heavy already (but it has two enormous pipes for a single cyl :rolleyes2:).
Therefore, I can't see why a 1200cc version should be very much heavier.

The BMW 1200 weighs in at around 199Kg reputedly: surely the new Yam is going to be lighter?

Yes, I half thought that would be a way to go to compete with the new BMW 800GS as soon as possible - why not produce both, a 900 and a 1200?
There would be competition in every size of engine in that case, with a single competing with a twin at the small engine size and on through twins competing with twins + a chain drive to compete with the big shaftie.

Not forgetting that the article in MCN also draws attention to the "other offerings" that are on the way from Triumph, Aprilia etc - all going for the 1200cc market, just as Moto G has already with the Stelvio.

Its a smart move by Yamaha. I think the 1200 will be a great Euro bashing bike but aimed at the road..

The TDM never really caught on for a travel bike which is a shame because a brilliant machine.

The 660 is for the real adventure types and the 1200 tenere will be suited to the usual 1200 GS crowd.

If they used the TDM 900 engine, they would just be accused of polishing a current model...

Lets all hope for spoked 21/17 wheels, a light chassis, big tank and good suspension although i can see it being another 1050 triumph tiger.

why no pictures of the actual engine? I want to see that engine =(

I'm sure there is a very good reason for that..... Probably the same reason why Yamaha haven't said anything about it's capacity.

To be a 1200 it would pretty much have to be a whole new engine design, and coupled with all the other new stuff it's a big leap for Yamaha. Mostly (and it's pretty true for cars and bikes) you see new parts being fited to 'face lift' models prior to a whole new one coming out. We've not see any of the new stuff in the adventure market, so my money is still on a tried and tested power plant tied to a new frame and trick bits.

Then a couple of years after the bike goes on sale we might see an 'all new' power plant.

But Yamaha are keeping this all very secret, so who knows what they are playing at....

Maybe see the first few hitting the roads in mid summer (2010).

Of course it's all just guess work though.:confused1:

I'd love to see a 1200 yam but sadly MCN are sometimes a long way off the mark of what's coming as they need to fill lots of pages of news :)

I love the yellow 'Kenny Roberts' one - even though Kenny never did this type of riding.

I'd love on of these bikes but it's alot of money for a bike that is built to be abused.
There also is alot of plastic, it's going to be a nightmare to keep well maintained and clean under the surface plastic.

It's still a good effort by Yamaha though.
