Hey I am up the road from you, I'm Rochester way sorting out an exhaust for an 87 xt600 that I plan to do some longer travels with, but at moment looking for some greenlaning time/ offroading. know any reasonable routes?

Attachment 765

I have a cunning plan for panniers, that I believe will be revolutionary (for pannier ideas anyway.) but more on that next year.

My beastie's ailments as follows:

Standard procedure old Clutch needs replacing eventually.
All cables, throttle and clutch are a bit sluggish in response and feeling probably too late for graphite treatment.
Oil drip onto right hand side of cylinder head, and blown onto ehaust (may be hydraulic fluid) This appears to be comon with my year.
Exhaust header rusted badly and now sheared off, weld/replace
General state of electrics needs on going attention various bits of corrosion, loose connections. Use heat shrink.
High tension lead to Spark plug needed to be "coke-a-cola'd" and then screwed in further.
Air filter cleaned and glued together.
Checked all rubber pipes connected to Carbs etc and most were just about right, or needed to be repositioned.
Some previous numptie using plastic cable ties not metal clamps on various hoses around bike needs to be addressed.
Replace oil and filter - V. important
My Oil filter cover plate looks to be a dogs breakfast and in need of replacing and possibly a thread being "re-bored".
Replaced Spark plug.
Fuel lines hardened and cracking, replaced as necessary
Rust, not serious but in need of attention.
Emptied out fuel tank, and discovered it was clean (wow)
Fuel petcocks a tad tight, need attention with penetrating/spray oil
All grease nipples greased.
Mine were immaculate, but two older bikes that I looked at had very badly corroded wheeles, and/or spokes around the valve/ clamp hole place.
My bearings are all good, but this I thought was unusual

My Dad always said to run a new (second hand motor) for two hours before taking it apart, most things sort of sort themselves out or rear their ugly heads.
Then take it apart, clean it and put it back together again.

Cheers G
