XT600E vs new XT660Z Tenere Engine

Hello everybody,

After riding for many years the XT600E 1998 bike, I am thinking to go for the new XT660Z TENERE.

But, one of the things I desire to be better is the engine power which is quiet modest in the XT600E.

How Stornger is the new 660 engine? from what I have read, it is not that stronger, is it true?

Thanks!

Hi, i owned both an XT600E 02 and a new Tenere last year (Tenere now sold and XT selling soon) and was therfore able to compare both bike. The Tenere is a superior bike in every way except for weight. The engine is better but not by a huge margin. The Tenere has a far better top speed and will cruise at 80-90mph all day with ease which would kill the XT. Fuel consumpion is also better giving up to 65mph and a tank range of up to 400+ miles. Thanks,

What about accelerations, like from 50 mph to 70 mph?
The cruising speed is very important to me, as any speed faster than 65 mph on the xt600e turns to be very uncomfortable.

better

Hey Mate,

I've just bought a 2009 tenere and have had a couple of XT600e's (2003) and as mentioned above, the new tenere is better in every way but the weight.
The pull is smoother and from 50-70mph there's a remarkable difference as it doesn't feel like it's straining the engine/gearbox. I used to cruise on the XT at 60-65mph but can now cruise at 80mph no bother. My old bike, a 2004 MuZ Mastiff has the XTZ660 engine and the power isn't really much different but the gearbox is, obviously.

The only bad things I can say are that the new Tenere doesn't feel as 'chuckable' as the old XT due to the weight and the styling, it's also higher, A LOT HIGHER! I'm 6'1" and still not quite foot flat down on both sides when at a stop so I'll lower it down an inch. The weight is more but waaaay lss than Africa twins and Beemers so I'll put up with it. Also the fuel injection is a bit snatchy from take off and town slow maneuvering, (something I hope to be able to recitfy by asking that question on here for a possible solution.) but under good acceleration it's a lot smoother than the XT and gets to 80+ in no time at all. I'm also fitting a higher screen (+70mm) to adjust for my height as the wind just hits me on the forehead at 60+.

So, to that end, I was looking for another XT600e for a while and didn't really think I would go for the new Tenere but one came up for a great price and I took it. Best decision I ever did!! You'll not regret it I'm sure.

Hope it helps

Interesting.

I would think a motorcycle tuning shop, not your dealer, they're incompetent hacks at it, but a tuning shop with a proper dyno, can get fuel injection snatchyness sorted easily. a power commander with a custom tune usually squares that away very well, and improves how the engine performs.

Thanks mate,
I'll find a place when I'm back in the UK as I work abroad and it's sitting in the garage now, Grr!
