XT600E Swingarm seals (1999)

While doing topend work on my 99 XT600E I noticed one of the swingarm
seals was broken and had slipped out of the thrust cover, this is a simple
fix to prevent it from happening again. and a few tips.

The photo below is another XT600 with the same problem.

Swingarm pivot bolt, easier than using a wrench/socket held in one hand while
attempting to torque the nut with the other, turn the bolt counter clockwise to
pinch/hold the flat piece of steel in place while you torque the nut to 61 ft lb.

I always seen that weird gap between the engine mount and the swingarm axle but never really thought of doing anything to it..

Nice job!

If the seal slides out by itself, its probably not doing its job, sealing. I think I would replace it. But yeah, lube everything up real good, pays up further down the road.

Nice "ghettomod" tho' (ment nice )

Great tip thanks! I posted a thread asking about that gap a few weeks ago, seems like a design fault to me on an off-road bike, mine does lots of fording rivers, I thought I was missing a seal when I put it back together.

Just as an extra precaution against water getting in I decided to fill the space with grease using a needle tip
on the grease gun.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
