XT600e starter doesn't!

The starter switch on my 2001 XT600e gradually stops making clean contact. I open it up and clean the points which fixes the problem until next time.
My first question - "Isn't this an unnecessary complicated switch?" The circuit through the switch spring seems to give an excellent opportunity for a short!
Second question - "Has anyone fitted any other kind of starter switch?"

Its just a simple low voltage contact switch, you can replace it with anything you like.
