XT600e issue?
 

My wife and I are getting our XT600e's made up for some serious traveling. Her bike is stock standard and low milage, whereas mine has been used to commute, travel, green lane etc. Mine had an aftermarket silencer on it, but my wifes didnt. My swingarm shaft and bearings showed wear to the right hand side, hers did not. All my bearings are changed now and all linkages greaced. I have a Marvin pipe on it now. Here's the thing though, when my suspension in compressed it kinda goes downwards slightliy diagonally, in a way which could wear the bearings out on the right hand side. My wifes bike doesnt, hers goes straight down and up. :confused1: Why? Both bikes have new suspension and all bearings, so why the difference? Is the exhaust on the 4PT part of the subframe bracing? Even a little? I know in older models it was an integral part of it.:helpsmilie:

Are there any spacers or washers that mihjt have been put in the wrong place?

The xt600 from around mid95 and atleast from 96 and up, has a slightly other frame than the others. It has a rod going from the right passenger fottpeg, going backwards and up, stiffening the rear frame. So the exhaust doenst carry the load anymore.

I dont think I ever heard about a xt600 with a broken subframe, but better safe than sorry I guess :)

the stock XT exhaust couldnt support a polo mint, in fact even the weight of too much paint seems to warp it thats probably why yamaha only put a micron thickness on it.

sounds like the bearings were not the only thing worn, was the shaft changed too?

The rear axel was bent, but I put a new one in. Dunno about the spacer/bearings, I'm gonna go see the mechanic tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. I have a hepco and beker luggage rack frame on too. Surely that will stiffen the back up somewhat?

Have a look at the parts manual and see if all the spacers and bits are there and in the right place.....

The mechanic braced the rear subframe with some machined spacers and a pretty sturdy bracket. It cant be seen much when the side covers are on but has done the job, as the suspension now goes up, and straight down. I will put full pics on here as soon as I get it back. Its ready for the onslaught...
