XT600E faulter at 3000 rpm
 

Greetings all.

I am new to the forum and have already found it a lot of help with getting to know a newly acquired 2002 XT600E. I have a lot of queries so here is the first :

Accelerating through 3000 rpm in any gear the motor hesitates and runs rough. Another 250 rpm and the faulter disappears. My first reaction is to check carb settings - is 3000 where the 2nd barrel cuts in, perhaps - or is this a characteristic of the 600?

First, do not accelarate through 3000 rpm, if you want your gearbox to last. Above 4000 is where you want to be / start.

The cutting in of the 2nd carb is not directly related to engine speed, but to engine load and the related airflow. When stationary and you open the throttle, second carb will not open up as the engine does not need the mixture to keep the speed. etc.

For spluttering, always first thing to look at is the airfilter. Must be clean. As factory settings of the carb are rich already, you do not need that much dirt in the filter to make the mix too rich. Easy test: ride a bit without filter.

Hi,

first thing you should try, take your airfilter off und ride it without filter for a few kilometers. If it goes well, its your airfilter.

The airfilter by the XT600E/XTZ660 is very small and quickly blocked.

I fitted new air and oil filters after purchase, so not a clogged air filter - is there a next step before getting the carb checked? Regarding keeping revs up / gearbox preservation - are the XT's prone to gearbox failure if allowed to chug along at low revs?

Hi, I have a 2003 XT600E and it does the same thing, has always done it since new. New air filter or not.

The exact rpm at which this occurs depends on the gear, but 2,900 in third
3,200 in fourth etc.

Like Bernard, I had assumed that this was where the second carb was cutting in and that it was "fluffing" just at this point. Anyhow, it makes the bike like a bad tempered mule to ride at these speeds (gearbox comments noted) but 3000 rpm and third gear = 30 mph. So, around town this is a desirable place to be, second gear @ 30 mph is to much.

Don't they all do this ?

it is a bit of a sore spot for the xt, the 3000rpm stutter, a forum search of this topic will yeald many results.

From my expirences the stutter can be caused by a dirty air filter or the secondary carb opening late and it is ussually not a electrical problem.

Manifolds ?
 

If this is more a problem from the newer XTs. Maybe its that Snorkel on top of the air filter box. Also the manifolds are different to older models they have a extension chamber or something like that on top.

I did once fit a snorkle from a 96 XT on a 93 and that bike did backfrire and did run very bad.

Maybe an easy thing to try. Just take the snorkel of.

I also did fit a 96 engine with that funny manifolds in an 1VJ and it did work well.
