XT600E Exhaust

Hello, a bit of advice please.
My recently bought 1999 XT600E with 25000km is back on the road with a new chain and sprocket set, new rear brake pads and an oil change.
Runs OK (though the ride is a bit firmer than I'd hoped), but there is some 'fluffiness' at certain revs. I find that a previous owner has 'circumcised' the exhaust outlet pipe and am wondering if this could be the cause.
I don't want a loud exhaust, or more power, so should I look for a replacement part or a different silencer? :confused1:

I'm surprised the stock exhaust is still in one piece and hasn't turned to 'Rust Dust'

Lots of options out there. Good way to save 10kg too. Lazer are popular.

After welding my original silencer up twice and not quite bringing myself to spend 200 quid on an arrow silencer,I found I actualy already had a standard silencer for a kxf 450 kicking around under the bench, then even more remarkably its a very close fit on my tenere, trimmed about 20 mm off and fitted..
