XT600E carb rubbers

ive got an xt600e and there is a small, thin rubber box connecting the carbs together, between the carbs and the engine.
this has a small split in it at the joint with the right hand carb.
what is this box?
what will happen if i dont fix it?
how do i fix it?
the bike runs fine at the moment, but this split can only get worse with time, so i want to get it sorted now before i get stranded somewhere.
any advice please?

Hi Dave,

It sound like some kind of balancing-connection. It's often used to keep a smooth gas-flow.
With a "split" I guess you mean a crack or leak? This is serious! It will suck in false air, witch make's the engine run to lean (will run hot) but even more serious, the air that goes in is un-filtered!

So, if you can't replace it (if you are on the road), try to repair it or remove it and block the hole's.

NB: Ofcourse this is all under the asumption that it is indead a balancing-pipe.

Klaus will probably have more detailed info about it.

maarten is right.
yamaha used this box only for one or two years (am not sure). you cannot find this box in the recent models.
so what you can do is just to close the holes in the intake manifolds with a bolt or something similar that fits and leave away this box.
regards,
klaus

its not as straightforward as i thought, its not the little box that is split, its the inlet rubber itself.i dont think it will be hard to fix(locktite is such wonderful stuff if its not on a toilet seat, dont you agree?),but it means more of a stripdown than just removing the box,so ill do it when i get time.
and, wouldnt you know it, it was working fine till i touched it and now she runs rough!

Maybe you can put some ducktape over it until you get time to fix it?
It's really bad for the engine to let it go on this way. I don't want to alarm you to much, but it could course permanent damage.
If it get's to hot for ducktape, try a piece of alu-tape (they use to fix exhausts).

Good luck
Maarten

I used cyano acrylate to bond the split, and changed the thin wire clips to wider jubilee type ones, kept the little box in the end, since there was nothing wrong with it.I`ll see how long it lasts, but the bike already runs better than when i got it!
while the bike was in bits on the floor I did Klaus` idea of plumbing a long hose to the crankcase breather that goes into the airbox.this now exits just over the chain.

Hi you can get new carb rubbers for 40 euros or less from German ebay or repair the ones you have with self amalgamating rubber tape...... it is used by sattelite TV installers to waterproof joints between the Cable and the LNB.

It is Black, made of rubber and bonds to itself, you have to stretch it a bout twice its length as you apply it, so a little strip off of the carbs may be in order, but this stuff is the 'Squirrels Squeak'* so to speak!
