XT600E

Hi,

I just bought a 1993 XT600E and I need some information, help and advice. I found many websites on this bike but I only read English.

What model number is this bike since the chassis number starts with JYA3UYE08RA------? I found a number of posts in this bulletin board on model number but don't remember 3UY model number. The bike is in Singapore and registered since new.

The sticker on the chain guard of most bikes with tires and pressure information is missing. What is the factory specified pressure? Can't find any information on the internet and Haynes and Clymers manuals on this bike are not sold here. The previous owner is not sure. Are there street tires for this bike? What are recommended?

What is the capacity of the petrol tank for this model and what is the consumption like for city riding? I pumped in 13.2L since picking up the bike 2 days ago and that was about 15 miles after reserve. I am looking into a bigger tank, at least 20L and would not mind any used tank. The bigger the better, even in excess of 30L. Other than Acerbis, IMS, and other 3rd party tanks which I do not have any idea what they are, can other XT model tanks fit onto the above bike? How about the different Tenere tanks?

The bike has done about 46000 km (just short of 29000 miles) in the past ten years. The engine fires up with just one push of the starter button and the engine sounds fine, idles fine, no knocking or rattling sound. But on shutting off the engine, there is a kluck sound with a hissing sound at the same time. Is this normal? What is that due to? What else should I look into when I service the bike?

I am sorry for the long posting. I have searched the net for the past one week and I am not able to gather much information for the above bike. Thank you for all replies. Have a nice weekend and ride safe.

Cheers,
thomas

Hello
There are people on this forum more expert than me, but here's a start
1 - check your model number by looking at number stamped on carburetter float chamber. My bike is a 4PT, and the carburettor is marked 4PT 10 (assumes carbs haven't been changed on your bike). May also be a model label on the frame under the seat.
2 - Tyre pressures in my manual are(psi= pounds per square inch)
Up to 90kg load Fr=22psi, Rr=22psi
Over 90 kg,Fr=22psi,Rr=33psi
High speed Fr=22pse,Rr=33psi
Off road Fr=19psi,Rr=19psi
Avon Distanzia get good all round reputation, but others will have their favourites. Myrear Bridgestone Trail Wing has worn out at 3800 miles, and I'm a pretty gentle rider.Front one still very good.
3 - Seek advice on large tank. From what I've read the tank has an effect on engine temperature by altering air flow round cylinder head.Other members will know more.
4 - I get around 60mpg on gentle riding.
5- I also get a clunk sometimes when I stop the engine,I wondered whether it was the balance weight system settling to a stop. Hissing might be hot oil in tank - I've had similar but with no problems with engine - perhaps don't worry. Regards

Hi Thomas:

Don't worry about the sound of the engine does when you turn it off,it's absolutely normal,as a matter of fact, all the yamahas does that loud metal sound, even my old yamaha tdm 850 i don't know about the flow cooling to the engine due to the fuel tanks but maybe it's true, but i think that's in the pre xt600 E,so that's it what i can say.

cheers

hi thomas, the tank on my 4PT 1997 model is total of 15Ltrs, with a 2Ltr reserve.

also, i just filled the tank today and did 127miles with 13.7 litres of fuel, doing my best not to be gentle or careful at all.

Dear All,

Thanks for the replies. I further checked for the model and I found conflicting numbers. On the chassis and emission sticker behind the left side panel it is indicated as 3UY but on the left side of the engine block, it says 3AJxxxx. The airbox indicated 3TB. I could not find any number on the carb. The bike was manufactured in 1993. Maybe for the Asian market, the model number is 3UY using 3AJ engines. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks.

Cheers,
thomas

thomas, my bike has a 3AJ engine, 3TB electrics, and the model number is 4PT, so dont worry about all the numbers, its a yamaha thing. mail klaus or david lambeth(addresses in here somewhere) and they will explain

Hi All,

Thanks for the posts. Saw an Acerbis tank for 43F for sale. Will it fit a 1993 XT600E with minimal modification? Thanks and have a nice weekend.

Cheers
thomas
