xt600 suspension questions

I am trying to improve the suspension on my 1989 u.s. model xt600. Does anyone know if the shock from an '83 tt600 (with remote gas reservoir) will fit it? And is this shock much better than the super-soft (possibly manufactured by the nerf corporation?) original shock?
Up front I am going to replace the current (and original) fork springs with progressive springs, unless anyone has a better idea. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Nate

I saw that on ebay too.

From the Works Performance application guide, it looks like the TT shock in question is a bit more than 1/2" longer than the XT shock for your year. Don't know about the other specs like bolt diameters, spring rate...

Thanks, I checked my clymer xt/tt manual and the linkages also appear signifigantly different. On the plus side the bike cost me nothing, so buying an ohlins is slightly less galling, but still...
