xt600 oil tank

I have an 84 xt600 and am in the process of a complete restoration turning it into a supermoto. The stock oil tank is in decent shape but its huge and ugly. What are my options for a better looking/hide-able oil tank.

Paint it? :S

Its clean and painted. Don't like how it looks on the bike. Wanted something smaller and updated.

Well, you need it!
Ya can't just take it off..

But tell me something..
Isn't that oil tank hidden on the back of the bike with the left side fairing?

There are some XT's that have the oil tank on the back of the frame just lilke I mentioned above..

Either you make it look nice - Maybe have it chromed?
Or try to find out if you fit your's in the back of the bike aswell.

Mine is on the back of the bike. I am not using the rear plastics with this project. I will have pictures up of my progress soon. Why do I "need" this one? I'm sure one of the same or close capacity being mounted else where on the bike would be just fine. Just asking for options. Thanks.

I would have thought that any kind of oil tank would be fine, even a nice shiny anodised ally one, just as long as you can carry the same quantity of oil as the standard tank. The only issue you may have if you relocate it somewhere too far away from its standard position may be that of increased or decreased hose length. I don't know if these changes would affect viscosity of oil needed or put any undue expectations on the oil pump. I have seen on a lot of V-Twin Chops where they do away with the Oil Tank all together, and increase the hose length to the car type oil filter which is mounted by the back axle. The larger oil filter and the increased length of oil hose takes the place of the Oil Tank.
Keep us posted of your progress, I have a '85 XT600 Ténéré thats getting close to needing a new oil tank, the standard one is nearly at the end of its life span. Drain plug is corroded in, every oil change I have to syphon all the oil out, nice quick job !!!
