XT600 oil bleed screw/oil pressure

I just changed my oil and filter on my(new to me) 1987 XT600 JYA49NOOXHA010105. The manual that I down loaded from this site says to fill the oil filter, but I filled it through the bleeder screw hole and it keeps taking oil and never fills. Also when I started it no oil came out of the bleeder hole. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Joe,
If it is the same as the 3AJ engine in my TT600R then you should allow up to a minute for the oil to flow from the bleed screw after starting the engine.

There is loads of advice in this XT tech thread/forum for how to correctly fill and check the oil - suggest you do a search within the HUBB for those key words and it will be there,

thanks for the reply. I do not know if it is the same engine. I did search the other posts, but there is nothing said about if you get no oil. I was hoping that this XT was different.

Oil check

Joe,
My bike is a 2001 model and the 3aj engine is common to some models of the XT - the manual says that if oil is not showing after about 1 minute then stop the engine immediately and check for problems in the supply. I guess it can't be all that different if there is a bleed screw available.
I have always understood the reference to filling the oil filter to mean "fill the cavity in the new filter while it is off the bike".

Have a look at the advice in this forum about checking the oil level - there is quite an art to that alone!!! Some of it appears at the bottom of this current thread, by association of key words I guess!

No problem Joe, and definitely worth checking the procedures are correct - "complicated" I know compared with slopping fresh oil into a wet sump, but they are there for good reasons.

I did not quite understand why my bike has around 3 litres of oil, according to the manual, but it only needs 2.5l for an oil change (and less from memory if the filter is not changed); that was until I saw all the nooks and crannies holding oil when I had the top half in bits recently.

Hi JoeB, I think you've got your wires crossed there. Fill up the bike in the normal way. Start the motor with the bleed screw(one at the top) slightly loose, - oil should start to seep from the bleed screw. This is to check that there's oil pressure in the system. If oil doesn't come out within a minute or so, stop the engine and you have to have a re-think. If the oil comes out, everythings good, and you can stop the engine and tighten the bleed screw.

thanks for the reply. I think that I may have a oil pressure issue. With the screw out and the bike running it feels like there is vacuum/suction at the screw hole or maybe this is a symptom of a air lock. I will wait to see if more post, but either way the bleed screw is checked there is no oil.

Did you have any inkling of low oil pressure before you changed the Oil ? do they have an oil light on them bikes.

I am new to these bikes got a TTR600RE and I changed the Oil when I got it as described on here, straight away oil pumped out of the bleed hole and after checking the oil level after the 10 mins of riding like they say on here everything was fine.

Its not as though you could of done anything wrong, the Oil really pissed out of my bleed hole all over the place.

Eliminate the simple things first Joe; no point in pulling the bike apart and changing, say, the oil pump if you have an air lock.

Dave,

I did let the bike sit overnight,upright, and tried again with no luck. I am going to fill a bottle with a halo quart of oil and put it into the bleed hole. See if that may do something for me.I might take the lines off and see if there is a restriction too. Thanks for the help guys.

Dry sump - filling with oil

Joe,
Just want to say that the volumes of oil that I mentioned are for the 3AJ engine - I hope that you don't overfill your bike; the oil going into the bleed screw may not be going into the actual filter, depending on the internal oil-ways built in there.

If it were my bike I would consider draining the oil and filling it in whatever way your manual recommends, taking on board the advice given in all of those earlier posts over many years of experience.

Hydraulic brakes don't like air in the system and I reckon that a dry sump oil system won't either,

I called the Yamaha shop today, they say that the bleed screw mentioned in the manual for that bike is on the head. I looked and can not find it, but their mech said it should be there. I am going to look more into it. Thanks for all the help.

Hi Joe, i had the same problem, no oil coming out of bleed screw when turning the engine over. what i did was preasurise the oil tank with an airline whilst turning the engine over with spark plug removed. worked for me. cheers T
