XT600 Mudguard Mod

Is there a mod to reduce the height of the front mudguard on the XT?
On a borrowed bike recently a got a 'sail' type effect on motorways over about 70mph. I'm thinking of buying a new XT but I'm a bit concerned about the height of the front guard as I plan to do a fair bit of motorway riding.

I notice the front guard of the late air-cooled Teneres (the ones with the fairing) is of the low variety. If the forks are common with your XT then maybe a guard off one would fit.
