XT600 gearbox problems?

I have just taken delivery of a Yamaha XT600 Tenere (1983).

It has a small gearbox problem - it won't go into 3rd gear!

You can select any other 1,2,4,5 without problem.

Has anyone had a simlar fault?
How did you sort it out?

Thanks in advance Tom

HI.

Sounds to me like you might have a worn out dog in there. only way to find out is to split the case´s and have a look inside the box.

Talking 3rd gear

hello i have got a 1986 tenere with exactly the same problem i have removed the engine and taken it apart (eventually it was hard to do because i had a lot of trouble getting alternator/flywheel off lh side) but have found one selector fork worn and two gear cogs on the final drive axle shaft where they lock together they are worn and will just make it pop out of gear under load.I have had trouble identifying my bike because yamaha do not recognize my frame/engine no it could have been stolen recovered in a previous life (it was an import about 1993) but i have sent some pictures of it to dave lambeth and he says he can help me because he keeps all parts for these bikes and offered to help me sort my gears out and spoke about uprating the oil pump and the gears. I am new to this forum i hope i havent gone on too much but i will keep everyone posted with my progress.

It just so happens I have got 2 spare bottom ends (gearboxes) ready to do a repair mine.
Get in touch and I might be able to help you.
Where abouts are you? I'm in Leeds.
