Unhappy XT600 engine parts needed

Hi, I'm looking for sensible priced engine parts.

I need suppliers the following:

Connecting rod kit
Main bearings
Piston kit

The reason I say sensible is the cost of the bike was minimal and it's 21/22 years old. It's a matter of economics, current prices via the net total £90 for the conrod, £30 for the mains and £110 for the piston. That's before I shell out for fitting the conrod/mains and a rebore. There's not going to be much change out of £300. considering that's 1/2 the price I paid for the whole bike and 1/3 of the cost of another I need to get the cost down.

The alternative is to break the engine/bike completely and part with the individual items via fleabay.

Please please help. I love the XT but don't want it to turn into a moneypit.

Whatever you spend on the XT will be money well spent and you will get years of enjoyment and reliability out of these ledgends.

xt engine

unfortunatly the ingrediants can end up costly,i got lucky with mine and found a new old stock genuine rod kit for a bargain,and a piston kit and mains cost what they cost.
the biggest shocker will be gearbox parts,usualy 3rd and 5th gear pitted badly,mine needed 4th gear drive also so ended up 300 quid of gearbox parts almost.
i think you could realisticaly end up 600 quid on parts on an early xt/tenere motor without too much trouble.
i chucked a rod kit and piston in my 34l tenere,left gearbox as was,done 4000 miles around europe on it,without a problem and am now giving it a little birthday now and doing gearbox now ive sort of bonded with the bike a bit.
ive now realised its quite a versatile bike,huge tank range,better off road than most of the newer wannabes as its 40kg lighter.
ive had a new model 660 tenere previously and im sort of thinking the original one was realy quite a bike in its day,im thinking theres not much you can buy now that will do same without spending fortunes on bigger fuel tank?

painfull

I understand, the painful thing is that I've had the bike since February, it was a 2 owner with around 12k on the clock.

I purchased a spare set of wheels and basically had the best of both worlds - road biased tyres on one set and off road biased on the other.
Recently I had road bikes but was fed up getting up on a Sunday morning and seeing rain so I went for the XT, I just switch wheels and go playing in the mud if it's raining.
The road set has a 40T rear sprocket and the off road a 47T, absolutely fabulous and the best of all is it's a 3TB but kickstart only so there's no starter problems.

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and spend the cash cos the alternative is buying another and being stuck with an electric start and the problems that go with it.

The XT is an awesome tool and considering it's capability is probably worth the investment

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
