XT600 Engine Life

What life can I expect from an XT600 if used for a RTW tour. It will be loved.

Any suggestions on when is a good time to replace Piston Rings, Clutch and Cam Chain for preventative maintenance while on route.

Thanks.

Lifetime

My Tenere (same engine as yr XT6) did easily 30.000 km Amsterdam to Cape Town, after a major overhaul.
If the bike is loved, the engine easily does 50.000 km and if you accept some smoking and other minor inconveniences could do 70.000 km without things like new pistons etc.

Thumbs up

Our '91 Tenere (3AJ) has done around 150,000km on original engine - no strip or rebuild yet! It has been UK to (and around) India, West Africa and, currently South America. It doesn't burn oil and uses about 0.5l in 1000km, especially when hot, which is most of the time now. Although always ridden two up with tons of luggage, I seldom exceed 4000rpm/75kph and firmly believe it's how the bike is ridden that matters most. Obviously, while I'm writing this, I'm touching a very large piece of wood!!

Engine Life

My 98 XT clock 70000KM used on and Off road I changed Piston Ring, and cam chain at 50000KM as I was told to do so but it did not seem to be necessary cam chain and ring looked like new
I changed the starter relay 3 times, I think it could have been the consequence of a week battery?Or is it common to the XT?I will surely bring a spare when I'll go travelingThe carburetor joint changed twice, neutral switch 2or 3times. At 70000 looks like the stearing bearing are gone, as well as the fork springs, and the rear shock!off road!
I haven't adjusted the Valves yet!sound like ok, the clutch is perfect still...I lately decided to shift every gear at 4500rpm to reduce the strain on the gearbox, as I was told the 4th and 5th gear were weak
I would expect the bike to last at least up to 150000KM without major rebuild, as I religiously change the oil every 6000 KM....
Hope this help
