cam chain

So I,m pulling the xt 600e apart to do the fifth gear whine....cam chain has 74 000 kms on it,do I replace it or is it still good for more? I was surprised at how good the piston and barrel looked and might just get away with a hone and a new set of rings,I ll let you know if it is in limits......

Looked after and serviced regularly they will go for ever (well nearly).

If you're in there, they're cheap enough to make it worth while.

I don't know about you're experience so I hope im not being patronising saying:

Rings and a hone are all you will need unless theres visable damage to the piston. If you remove the piston to change the rings, make sure you use a new lock ring for the gudgeon pin.

De-coking the head and with a brillo pad would be nice and maybe grinding the valves if they look pitted or badly coked.

If it were me, if probably do the valve seals too. Its a simple engine and not many valves so hardly a big deal.

Jeez, if it were mine then id probably change the crank bearing and clutch bearing but im just a fool who loves wasting money

Change the cam chain! Mine broke with only 30000 km and bent both exhaust valves, you don't want that or worse!

Risk equals probability times consequence. Low probability (probably won't break) but high consequence (i.e. top end rebuild by the roadside) equals a moderate risk and suggests you replace the chain when convenient. I did KLR chain at 50k miles.

I will replace my cam chain as I have found the yamaha dealer here is really well priced,I measured the piston and bore and it looks like 2 nd oversize and in really good condition so I think I will just get a hone and new rings and replace all rings and lock washers ....shame to not do it and have the engine blow for a penny washer......
