But it is massively appreciated! I cannot open the site, but I guess it's a temporary issue. Looking forward to check it out!

Do you have any recommendations for a home-made tool to rotate the square adjusters? I use a pair of pliers but it's clumsy and makes getting a consistent 'feel' for the gauge difficult. Good spot on the angled feeler gauges. I use an old set that I have creased into the approximately right angles, but the ones you have seem ideal.

Good post, thank you.

IMPORTANT. Don't get the one I've got, this one:

Why? Too big to work in such a tiny space, since you have to put the wrench right under this tool to tighten the locknut, while this tool must remain to top to hold the adjuster at the right position.

While something like this (that I'm going to buy to "re-adjust" again the valve clearance) may allow you to move more freely, more precisely while the wrench remains underneath. You should be able to lift the box/ring wrench to keep on tightening the nut while you still keep in place this tool to maintain the position of the valve adjuster.

I'm no expert, but the opposite, that's why I tell you, don't try the big one!

Thanks guys - that looks perfect.

Update: I've been looking at offset feeler gauges on eBay. I can't find one with less than .005"/0.127mm blades. The inlets need .004"/0.10mm at the most. Think I will stick with my home-modified Halfords cheapies for now. The Motion Pro gauges are over 30GBP per blade - that's way too much for a bit of convenience, even though they look very good bits of kit.

Wow, that's way more than I paid for mine, although I did buy mine a few years back and they just happened to be right for the XT.

Edit: Take a look here

Thanks for the link - those prices are more reasonable! Goes to show how careful you need to be with eBay. I reckon 3 gauges should do it - a 2 and 4 thou for a min/max on the inlet, and a 6 thou for a mid-range setting for the exhaust. That's 13GBP plus shipping - not so bad.

Last question ... the link to the adjuster tool above is for a 4mm square hole, and is advertised for Honda and Kawasaki. From the same seller, there are also 3mm tools for Yamaha. Do you know which fits the XT? My guess would be that the adjuster screws on my bike are 3mm rather than 4mm, but I haven't checked. Can you confirm which it is? (Working nights at the moment, and no time to dismantle and look for myself.) Think I'll order one of those and re-do the tappets. I have never felt I have got them bang-on since I've had the bike - just 'near enough'.

Estebangc - thanks for the tip about the other tool. I had considered one of these, but decided against for similar reasons.

Sorry for the bad form in answering my own post, but ...

On my XT the adjusters are 3mm. Have ordered one.

Thanks again.

Having spent the whole evening searching Google it looks like the site you mention (oro2u.com) are the only UK source for these gauges. Other Motion Pro distributors don't seem to carry them. And the oro2u.com site isn't playing - lots of 404 Not Found and all that. I shall give them a ring as soon as the Mrs is not around

Thanks again.
