XT 600 not starting

Hi all,

I have a 03 xt600 which isnt turning over, new battery, ign light on, dims slightly when starter button pressed, horn lively, batt charged.

I cant bump start it as its too high compression.

Any ideas to try, my guess starter stuck????

Much appreciated,

Mark

If its a fused relay between the battery and starter check it.if its ok bridge the cable terminals with a pair of insulated pliers,if it turns over the problem is in the starter push button or relay itself.if it dont turn over its the starter.take it bike was running ok when it was parked up.

Thanks, yes it was running fine when parked up over a month ago, battery wasnt great though so replaced and ended up with this.

Battery terminals ok though. Where is the starter relay located on these bikes?

Thanks for your help

Not sure on the xt as i havnt owned one but if you follow the + lead from the battery it goes to the relay, some relays have fuses and some dont.sorry i cant be bike specific.maybe worth getting a manual for it'

you can get a set of gator clips with a thick gauge wire and link the positive and negative terminals of the starter relay together if it turns over than you have a bad relay.. not sure if they changed the location in the newer yearsbut mine is located just behind the frame above the positive terminal to the battery

Thanks everyone,

It was the starter relay, bike started when relay was jumped.

Next question, best place to get one? Its a MS5F-631

I´ve put one from a Kymco 650 in my XT that works perfectly and cost a fraction of the original from Yamaha.

Hi, yamaha raptor 350's seem to use the same relay. Much cheaper on ebay, than at the dealer:

This looks identical to the one on my 2003 xt600e:
