xt 600 1vj engine rebuild cost?

i have a xt600 engine (1vj) at home which came to me totally dissasembled in boxes.absolutly every nut and bolt appart.what little work ive done on my current xt engine has not been that cheap in my opinion. can some one give me a rough guess at cost of rebuilding minus the topend ie barrel piston etc. how much stuff within the gearbox etc is consumable etc ie if all the bearings run true and smooth am i just up against seals and gaskets? i belive i can measure the cranks end float etc to get an idea of condition as rebuilding that would be ££ as well.
i could buy a complete engine secondhand , but then i think i only have someones word for it and it could be just as bad??

just to add on the "average" xt which gets average maintanence, does/will much wear within the gearbox area occur.xt's are renound for being bulletproof so if the bottom end had some regularish oil changes and haddent had to many wheelies/abuse in its time would it be likelly to be ok?

Hi,

1vj's suffer from 5th gear problems so check them out really carefully.
As for cost, i'll let you know soon.......just finished stripping mine down for a full rebuild. (my 5th gear was shot )

I'll have your box of bits if you don't want them.

Or if you choose to build - I have a box of left overs if you are missing any bits.

why does fifth gear suffer?is it if its seen lots of motorway miles? id have thought the lower gears would have been worse and had heard they eat the second gear?
how can you tell the condition of the fifth gear?

bumping this thread again!

The 5th gear is lacking some lubrication, I guess you can tell from the sound.

It will likely "scream" if it needs repair.
