Worried !!

Hi -I am looking for some advice before I get in touch with my Yamaha dealer who is closed today.
Last Sept I spent my life savings on a new XT600e. It has now done 1150 miles and was serviced as recommended at 600 miles.
I was going to go out for a run today but found the oil level below the marker stick !!
I must confess this is the first time I have ran the engine before checking the oil level - as described in the manual. Prior to my last run of 260 miles the level was half way up the stick, but I had not run the engine prior to checking - never had to do this on any other bike I have had.
Any ideas how the oil could vanish so fast, assuming it was topped up properly at its 600 mile service.
Is the level obtained without running the engine for the recommended 10 seconds totally wrong!
Any help gratefully recieved.

1) don't assume
2) you can only check oil level properly after riding at least 15 minutes, so when you come home, don't stop engine, go inside, take off your helmet etc., sit on the bike, let the engine idle for a minute [60 s.], stop engine and check level.

Thanks for the advice, I had the bike on a paddock stand at the weekend - must have upset oil level. Ran the bike for 5 mins at idle and the oil level went back to normal. I am not used to bikes with oil in the frame!! Again many thanks for replying.
