worn teeth on gear selector- 3aj tenere

hi can anyone help, ive just bought a tenere for a trip from london to perth next year and when i got home the gear lever came loose, (great start). ive had a look at the shaft and the lever and found the teeth to be worn down, with a bit cut off the clamp so i can tighten it a bit more than usual it still spins on the shaft. has anyone got any words of wisdom on how i can solve this anoying problem.

Hi
I had a Triumph Herald once with wire wheels, and worn hub splines. I used to wrap a couple of layers of aluminium foil onto the spline before putting the wheel on. It worked wonders and I drove it like that for months.
If it works for a constantly revolving wheel, its worth a try on a gear lever shaft.

The best solution would be to replace the shaft and the lever but I gussing you are looking for other suggestions.
One option would be to install the lever and drill a hole where the spline is so half is in the lever and half in the shaft, your could then drive a roll pin into the hole say 3/16". or for extra security you could drill and thread it say 6mm and install a bolt. This would keep the lever from spinning ot the shaft.

thanks alot lads, youve been a great help. ive gone for the aluminium rap for now because ive got itchy feet and just want to get out and ride my new bike but i like the idea of threading the shaft and lever, very clever idea, i think ill try that before i set off on my trip.

Sadly I was lying in bed last night thinking about this problem. Not sure what that says about me. I too came up with the idea of drilling a small hole through the lever, but also through the shaft, and inserting a split pin, or an R clip.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
