weak spark

`97 XT600E
will not start, has a very weak spark.spark plug and battery are good.
on these bikes, what is most likely, coil, generator or CDI?

first check ignition coil.
then change cdi for testing, if possible.
generator has nothing to do with the spark (battery ignition).

thanks klaus, im glad its not the gen, thats the most expensive part! how do i test the coil? ive got a tenere clymer manual that goes through it very well, but the coils on the two bikes are different! can you tell me what to prod with my meter, and what it should read?

no, still no good,
plug
plug cap
HT lead
coil
are all ok, and all the wiring between there and the CDI and rectifier is ok.i have checked as many earths/grounds as i can find. how do i test the cdi and rectifier, or is there no way?

first connect the bike to a well charged car battery and try to start.
if this doesn't help change cdi.
no way to check cdi in static mode, there's nothing what you can measure. and i bet you don't have the equipment to check cdi's function while engine is running.
check also the pickup.
easiest would be to find somebody with equal bike who is willing to change parts with you for testing purpose.

good luck

still no good!
ive checked;
coil,spark plug,ht cap+lead
kill/ignition/sidestand switch
rectifier
cdi has been tested
battery
every connection and earth i can find

how do i test the pick up?

Dave,

If you have a tenere manual thats no good to you and it would be OK for 86 1VJ tenere I'd happily buy it off you or get you an XT600E manual and do a swap !

I have a load of wiring probs and I only have an XT600 TT600 manual which has a completely different wiring set up.

good luck,

Simon

sorry mate, as far as i know the clymer XT/TT600 manual is the only one you can get for these bikes! most things are the same, but not the electrics, which is what most people have problems with, i think. Yamaha may do an official workshop manual, but the last time i tried to get one(it was for a suzuki) they wanted £85 for it, the buggers!

on a different tack, does anyone know what two small black boxes are, wired into the loom under the side panel between the CDI and battery?

I think it are relays, used for the starter engine or the turn lights or the side stand. At least this is what they are used for on my Tenere 3AJ.

connect a voltmeter (dc-range) to the white/yellow and the yellow/green cable.
it should read something around 0.3 v while generator is revolving.
are you sure that you have the right ignition coil?
since 1990 (3TB) the coils are much bigger than before because they have to work with 12 v.
if you use an old coil in these bikes you will get a very weak spark.
