waterproofing electrics

somewhere along the way a read a thread about waterproofing your bikes electrical systems... i was going to cover the main electrical conectors with plastic and electrical tape, is this just overkill or a common practice....thanks phil.

Plastic? Electrical tape? Sounds like rubbish materials. If you want to do things properly use self-vulcanizing tape [the one that you have to stretch to twice the length]. Definitely don't use tape that sticks because the glue will get all sticky and slippery.
And why would you want to try to waterproof things? Originally a Ténéré is waterproof and the electrics give no problems afaik. At least mine don't. Just unplug the plugs once in a few years and blow-clean them. No WD-40 because this leaves an insulating layer!
And of course don't ever try to clean the bike. That destroys switches/connections/wheel bearings/choke plunger etc. And the looks.
