various xt modifications ?

Hi all,
Ive got a few random questions which im sure have been considered many times before....Ive got the xt600e btw.

- Can one attach Crash bars to the bike and is this necessary with an acerbis tank taking the impact of all falls ?

- Are K&N Air Filters a good option for dusty trips or would the bike require some carb/ engine tweaks ? - is this easy ?

- Any ideas how can one secure giant loop soft panniers from theft as their shape wont allow pac safe cages.

- Is it a good idea to secure a lockable metal box to the bike for valuables if using soft panniers ? - or any other solutions ?

- What is the best way to attach additional petrol, spare tyres to the bike if Im using soft luggage ? - would the yamaha rear rack (the one that attaches to the passenger hand grip and indicator) support the weight of these or should a pannier frame be built specifically for this ?

- Is attaching an Ammo Box to the bash plate a clever idea to carry tools etc....or would this obstruct the air flow causing the bike to overheat

- Are foot pegs with a larger surface area a good idea ? - can these be bought or just welded on ? - or not necessary.

- Anyone had any theft problems inserting a petrol tap in the fuel line to decant petrol for camping stoves etc ? (Tampering or petrol theft)

Thanks

Hi, crashbars can be had yes, i know KEDO - Performance Products offers some, aswell as others.

I have a 23ltr acerbis tank on, and dont have crashbars, but I didnt have crashbars with the stock fueltank either. When I crash, i sometimes bend the brakepedal or the gearshifter, but they are easy to bend back. Id rather have that, than having them snap.

K&N filter on the xt600e should require many carb issues, as the bikes come rich from stock. But i wouldnt reccomend them for dusty conditions, most people wont. I have a pipercross (piperx) foamfilter for mine.

I would have valuables in a tank bag og backpack, and always carry it with me.

I have a yamaha rack, its only rated for like 5kg ( i guess better safe than sorry) but i've had much more weight on it with no issues. One could reinforce it a bit to make it attach to the subframe aswell...

As for the ammobox, i dont know, a small one could be handy i guess. As long as it doesnt go up over the cylinder, i guess you should be fine.

Aftermarket footpegs from a yamaha tw200 fit directly, and they often cost aorund 15$ on ebay or at Motorcycle Parts | Motorcycle Accessories | Motorcycle Gloves | D2Moto Buy em!

Hope this helps.

the OE rack is rated to 5kg but can carry a lot more . i carry a waterproof rollbag with all the camping gear and 2 tyres on the back and have never had any problem even going offroad for a long time and bottoming out my rear shock . i have a amo box on my ali sump plate . i packed it out with washers so the air can get in and have never had a problem . you might want to cut the bottom of the amo box and re weld so you dont loose ground clearence and weld a tab on so you can padlock it .
