97' XT600E start failing / starting circuit cutoff relay p/n ?

gentlemen, just picked up a 97 xt600e. unfortunately it came with an issue of the starter motor failing to engage. sometimes you can hear the starter solenoid click (pulling), sometimes not. battery is fine, full charge, full potential. previous owner just replaced battery in april 2012.

so i bypassed the starter solenoid with a jumper from the battery (+) direct to starter post and it starts up fine. suspecting the starter solenoid i searched ebay and found quite a few sources on line. Various pricing, some with their own vendor p/n’s

when i called yamaha in savannah, georgia (just visiting) they didn't even show a reference for 97 xt600e. with the p/n i found in an online ipl : 4JG-81940-00 they were able to see a relay 4JG-81940-00-00, superseded by 4JG-81940-12-00 (usd79.00)

I then went back to ebay and just purchased a starter relay for usd17.00. source is ems global direct, Manufacturer Part Number: 4KD-81940-00-00. referenced to fit all xt600's. mine is a 97 xt600e. physically they look the same. hope it works !

Then on another thread here (06/02_XT600 stater motor troubles) I found where BobMech listed:

The genuine Yamaha starter solenoid(relay) for a 2001 4PT XT600E is part#4JG 81940 00, which in 2005 was superseded to part#4JG 81940 10, then in 2006 was again superseded to part#4JG 81940 12.
So there must have been problems with them.
Powersports Plus.com have the Geniune Yamaha latest superseded one, part#4JG 81940 12 for US$49.14 plus shipping.

I’ll post here in couple weeks when I get back to hong kong and fit the relay 4KD-81940-00-00 and whether it’s a success or fault still there. Hey for 17.00 vs 49.00 or more my shotgun troubleshooting not so expensive. So I tell myself.

if not i'm into verifying the wiring circuit from the start switch to the relay (control circuit). looking for high resistance or itermittent open, etc

Additionally as per the xt600a/ae service manual (see links on tech forum home page) the troubleshooting also references they starting circuit cutoff relay. i have not been successful in finding that relay in a publication for a part number.

Does anyone have a reference or part number for the starting circuit cutoff relay ?

Be cool….

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
